Quickly close other tabs in Safari Apps
I just noticed what might seem obvious, but no one I've asked seems to have noticed. To quickly close other open tabs in an open Safari window, simply hold the Option key while pressing the "close tab" icon (the small "X") on the tab. Very nice indeed!

[robg adds: This is an improvement over earlier Safari releases, where Option-click would close all tabs.]

cmd + opt + w also accomplishes this, just like in most other applications: that command will close all open windows in an application without quitting it. It actuallys works differently in Safari, because it DOES leave the active tab open.

Closing everything

In Safari cmd+shift+w closes all tabs including the one currently active.

Another nice thing: in all programs, including Safari, clicking one of the colored top left buttons while pressing option, will apply that action to all windows of that program.

This behavior has been standard for some time now, as it is present on 10.3.

This isn't a hint — it's documented (on screen, anyway).

I'm using Panther, so I'm confused. First, I'm not sure why this is an improvement when it violates a UI rule dating back to the Mac Plus, that using the Option modifier on a close action closes all instances. Option-click *should* close all tabs. Second, since under Panther you can click any arbitrary tab's close icon to close it whether frontmost or background, why is a change needed?

(I do note that the hint says it "closes all open tabs" as opposed to "closes all tabs." But I'm unclear what an "open tab" is that differs from a tab that isn't frontmost. But even if there's a distinction I've missed because I haven't upgraded, it's still a UI issue...)
