Slow down video while maintaining pitch in QuickTime 7 System
I just noticed that when playing a track in QuickTime 7 (Pro) that you can adjust the pitch of the song without affecting the vocals! Command-K brings up the A/V Controls screen, from where you can adjust the Playback speed slider. When you do so, the audio and video slow down, but the pitch remains unchanged. This is great news for musicians who want to slow down the beat of a tune and hear exactly what is going on. Now if they could only intergrate it into iTunes...

Note that this doesn't work with all formats, only some.

There is a program that I've used from time to time called the Amazing Slow Downer. Link It lets you play with all aspects of the sound. We used it to help an aphasic child work on his pitch and speed, but it would be great for musicians and transcribers as well.

There's also Audacity, an open source audio player that can read MP3 files and do things like slow down playback with or without affecting pitch. They have a pre-built binary for OS X; it works on Tiger without any problems.

I used that to get Louis Prima's "scat singing" syllables from "Just a Gigolo/I Ain't Got Nobody" and it works great!

(Audacity is also able to do LOTS of transformations on audio files or portions thereof; think of it as Photoshop or GIMP for audio)

TimeFactory 2 by Prosoniq: http://www.prosoniq.com. Definitely the best app for this purpose (comes with iTunes playlist import as well). There's a detailed review of all apps here:
