10.4: Alter Spotlight's menubar icon (and more) System 10.4
Tiger only hintAs of MacOS X 10.4.1, it appears that all of Spotlight's resources related to the menubar item (such as its menubar icon) are stored in:

/System/Library/CoreServices/Search.bundle/Contents/Resources/

If you don't want to manually dig to the location then use the Finder's "Go to Folder" feature under the Go menu, paste the above path in, and you're there! Have fun, and remember to backup before going nuts!

This (using services to open selected path in the finder) is a valuable hint in itself!

If only it could be done straight from the contextual menu, or via customisable keyboard shortcuts!

Anyway, I've just edited (with backup of course) MDSimpleGrouping.strings there to get rid of the superfluous apostrophe in 'Events and ToDo's'. Worked like a charm, although it would have been quicker if I had been able to remember the exact terminal command to kill the dock without logging out :). Nice hint.

What I would like is the ability to move the spotlight icon anywhere on the menu bar...

Anyone figured out how to do this yet?

I'm not sure this will be possible; Apple has designed Spotlight to be in the corner, and initially it was also supposed to take up all of that corner with a special button, now it looks more plain.

Internally the Spotlight menu uses an NSStatusItem, the immovable cousin of NSMenuExtra, which means that there are no simple means to make the spotlight menu movable. All your other favorite Apple menu widgets use NSMenuExtra, making them movable.

I use ShapeShifter, and redesign my elements with ThemePark. This is safer because it leaves the original files exactly as they are (you can revert any time) and just substitutes resources in memory at launch time. ThemePark is particularly effective if you're facile with graphics but a novice at this sort of hack, because it presents all the elements to modify in hierarchical lists, and even explains what many of them are used for.
