10.4: Fix Ruby extension library building System 10.4
Tiger only hintI've wanted to experiment with Ruby on Rails (the same technology behind Backpack) for a while now, but ran into a problem when I tried to install it on my 10.4 machine. Rails installs with gem, no problem, but I couldn't get gem to build the external libraries Ruby needs to interact with MySQL.

Fortunately, the kind folks at technoblog created a script that does all the fixes you need to get your Tiger Ruby to properly make binary libraries.

If you're running gem, you can use do 'gem install fixrbconfig' to accomplish the same thing.
fixrbconfig (1.0)
Fixes the rbconfig.rb that ships with Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger), which
makes it impossible to compile C extensions

Apple-included ruby in 10.4 is broken

Please note that the Apple-included ruby in 10.4 is broken, even beyond the problems mentioned in this article.
It handles endianness wrong which breaks the String.pack & unpack-methods, who knows what else? Do yourself a favor, install ruby from darwinports or similar.
