Addicted to mail.appetizer and missing it badly with Tiger? Try the similarly-free GrowlMail instead.

Get notification of new Mail messages in 10.4
I switched to Growl a while ago because mail appetizer didn't work properly.

Growl Mail notifier is really way better than the one from mail.appetizer.

Really way better in what way exactly?

I will certainly give this a try, but I have to say that after upgrading mail.appetizer is the one thing I sorely miss. I have even emailed the programmer hoping to urge him along with his update!

I liked GrowlMail but since the update to 0.7 I began to have problems with Mail crashing. Growl also seems to generate a file for every notification (just check out your Recent Items under the Apple menu after receiving a bunch of messages). I liked the idea of seeing my messages like Entourage, but if you have more than 5 or 6 messages it politely says something like "And 15 others" instead of displaying every last message.

as I said in another comment, most of the crashes that have been reported to us (did you report yours?) have been caused by other plug-ins not liking GrowlMail's presence. GrowlMail by itself rarely crashes.
those are actually registrations, not notifications. we fixed this in the 0.7 framework, so any applications that are still not deleting these files are either still using the old framework or are out of date on your system. you can read the files in your favourite text editor to see which application(s) are generating them. they're not stored permanently, however; they're in /tmp, so they'll be deleted when you shut down.
'Summary mode', as we call that, can be turned off in GrowlMail's preferences (which are in Mail preferences).

GrowlMail caused me a lot of crashes in mail.app. Switching it off was all it took to immediately stop the crashes, so I assume that it was the source of my instability. I was using the latest version available in early June '05 as I was another miserable Tiger/appetizer refugee.

most of the GrowlMail crashes that have been reported to us (did you report yours?) involved other plug-ins not liking GrowlMail's presence. GrowlMail itself rarely causes a problem. I am a Growl developer.

Just tested Growl. It's not up to version 1 yet, but there are many annoying things about it. Some notifications you can move, some you can't. Some notifications can stay on screen until clicked, some can't... Annoying little things like that.
Get notification of new Mail messages in 10.4
actually, we don't have any movable notifications. you can change the position of Bezel notifications, but that's in the preference pane — there's no dragging. we do plan to extend the preference, whether by dragging or by the same control; we haven't decided yet.
that's a feature, called 'sticky'. you can override the developer's preference in Growl preferences. I am a Growl developer.

Thanks for your "corrections". Positioning is what I meant by "moving notifications." It would seem if it works for one (Bezel), it should work for another.

and it will in 0.7.

Glad to hear!
Growl, like LanOSD?
I seem to be out of the loop, as I've never heard of this Growl program. It looks a lot like LanOSD http://oomz.net/Lanosd/, which I've been using since 10.3.something for mail notifications, on-screen notifications from cron events, etc. Still works fine in 10.4.1, and can display notifications on other computers, not just the machine on which the event takes place. I just thought it was worth mentioning here in case one of these two programs has something the other doesn't offer.

Have a look at iAlert
I used Growl for a while, but then I discoverd iAlert. It works without defining rules in Mail and you can costumize your alerts easily using simple HTML tags and variables. No Apple Scripting required. It also works with iChat and other programs and provides some cool services. Seems much more mac-like to me than Growl.

Growl is great. I've had no problems with it so far...and mail notifications work just fine. Obviously I also use it with Synergy, cyberduck and various other apps...

like GrowlMail.
you're speaking from a developer standpoint (we consider scripts to be as applications). with Growl, you fill out the notification before you post it. this is a more efficient use of resources in OS X's preemptively-multitasked environment: other notifications don't have to be kept waiting while Growl interpolates variables. this hint is written from a user standpoint: install GrowlMail, and it will Just Work.
neither Growl nor GrowlMail requires use of AppleScript.
Growl works with over a hundred programs, and iChat is one of them with a third-party iChat script.
Have a look at MacBiff
It's a port of Biff, and handles IMAP accounts. A small, unobtrusive number in the menu bar tells you how many unread mails are waiting for you. In the menu you can see the folder hierarchy in your respective accounts, and check the mails "from" and "subject" header (visible in the menu directly), and launch mail.
Oh, and it's free (and supports Growl) http://www.forkit.org/macbiff ---
Why not just use a smart folder
I use a smart folder with "show all mail for Today. It would be perfect if it would keep the mailbox column in column settings but it forgets the mailbox column whenever I click to another mailbox.

It looks like GrowlMail can only use the accounts configured in Mail.app, although I haven't actually tried it. I don't use Mail.app, so is there some way to get notifications for accounts configured in thunderbird? |
