Forward iChat messages to a cell phone Apps
While you can write an AppleScript to check iChat and page you with a message, there's an easier solution -- just let AIM handle it for you.

Just go to the Mobile AIM page and set up "IM Forwarding." Then, your AIM iChat messages will automatically be forwarded to your mobile phone when you are offline or away from your Mac. You can even reply to them using your phone! Seems a lot more efficient than running AppleScripts, which won't let you reply -- or turn off your Mac.

I know this isn't a cell phone forum, but when I try to log on AIM with my cingular phone it says GPRS access denied. I thought AIM just counted as SMS messages, but do you I have to buy something extra to use it?

As this web-site is viewed by people the world over its important to note that this doesn't work if you are outside the US.

But if you have to pay for each message (as of some plans), wouldn't the more cost effective somution be to use AS while away from the computer.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but this will only work with an AOL AIM account, not your .Mac AIM account. I can sign in and setup forwarding on an AIM account I setup years ago, but cannot do so with my .Mac name. That is weird, since it was my understanding that your .Mac name was just another AIM account.

That was my experience as well. If anyone has a solution, I'd like to hear it.

Of course if your Cell provider and the handset you've selected offer AIM, all of this is moot.

I came up with the AS solution because I didn't want EVERY message coming to my cell phone when I was away. I wanted to know that "someone specifically" sent me an IM and then I would go check the computer. This lets me water the garden while I'm supposed to be working and still be responsive - and saves $.02 per message sent which can add up quickly when you IM with people who send 5 words per RETURN.

thanks for the AS code

Thank you for that script, Zee. It certainly limits the amount of activity to the cell phone especially when one is in a meeting at work. :)

Your script also opens up the possibility of easy pager-type notification when non-iChat event occurs. Think about the things that you might be monitoring and want to get alerts for:

  • calendar alarms to a phone that is not sync'ed to your iCal
  • email from a spouse or a certain client/customer
  • specific events in system.log, ftp.log, secure.log, ipfw.log, virex.log, linksys.log, osxvnc.log, named.log, access_log
  • continued high network usage that may indicate a DOS attach
  • new item in your Drop Box
  • new hint posted here :)

Out of box 1st gen and 3G iphone with latest patches, problem since beginning of time. Using mac.com registrations and straight up AIM names. Settings take when at mobile.aol.com and immediately appear as mobile in iChat or other application.

Remains in effect for <24 hours and then it boots me. The only way to restore mobile status is to go back to mobile.aol.com.

Its a very desirable feature that is terribly inconsistent!

I've set up my AIM to forward messages, but when I'm signed out of ichat and someone texts me my iChat (on my mac) auto starts up and accepts the message rather than forwarding to my mobile. Any advise? Anyone?
