Force Mail to allow account choice at send time Apps
I gave up Entourage for Apple's Mail 2.0 program. I have five email accounts: Several personal, one for my wife, work, etc. The problem is when I create a new email, I sometimes don't pay attention and send a personal email with my work email account, or vice versa. So, how do I get arround this?

I created a bogus account called Select Account. Then, In the Composing section of Mail's Preferences, I set the 'Send Mail From' pop-up to the bogus Select Account. I then went back to the Accounts section, highilighted my bogus account, and on the Advanced tab, I unchecked the Enable this Account setting.

Now, in my In box, the bogus mail account does not show. However, when I create a new message, the Account drop-down shows this bright red (because it's disabled) Select Account at the top of the list. If you don't select an account and try to send the message with your bogus account, you get an error from Mail which allows you to select an account.

Just a note: if you visit the Composing section of Preferences again, Mail will unselect your bogus, disabled account. You then have to enable the bogus account, select the bogus as your default, and then disable the bogus account again.

How nice is that? No more sending "let's play hooky today!" notes with the work email account!

Great hint indeed. However, I have a slight problem getting it to work as described. I can get the account set up and shown in the list as red, but sending test messages actually works with this account. It uses my primary account (a gmail account) but with the name 'Select Account'. I've tried setting the outgoing mail server to other servers I use or 'None' but it doesn't work.

I don't know if it's the httpmail plugin messing things up maybe? Or is it because the gmail account uses authentication so I can always send with that one perhaps?

You may have to set up a bogus smtp server as well. Haven't tried the hint, but the list is populated by your Outgoing Mail Servers list, if I am not mistaken.

This is a nice hint, but wouldn't it just be easier to pay attention?

Shouldn't this be marked as a Tiger only hint? I didn't see the icon so I went and got all excited and tried it in my Panther Mail, and, of course, it didn't work. So now I've wasted all of 45 seconds, and I feel like a schmuck. Which is nothing new, but still... Is there a way to add the Tiger only flag to this?

For me it didn't work wit any POP Account, but it works with an Exchange Account. If I don't select an account and try to send a message from my bogus account I get an error and at the same time the bogus account is unselected. So I have to open the Preferences, select it again as default and disable it.

To solve this problem, I use the "new mail message" Automator action, with specific account set and save it as a Script Menu plugin, so it always appears on the global scripts menu as, eg, "Send mail from work account".

You can also get it to ask you to choose the account before showing you the new mail window, if that is more to your liking.

You do this by expanding the automator action options, check "show action when run", choosing "show selected items" and then checking just "account" in the item list.

Obviously 10.4 only.

Why don't you just put your home email domains into the "Mark addresses not in this domain" under Mail/Preferences/Composing?

The next time you bring up a new mail message window, your work email domain will be highlighted in red.

1. In order to get the the "Compose" settings to "see" the new bogus account, I had to close Mail.app and re-open it.

2. Even if I set a bogus SMTP server , if I leave the message send set to the bogus account, and hit "Send" it sends it! Although it doesn't actually go anywhere. The message just dissapears, and the little "progress indicator" twirly thing spins beside "Sent" for a moment, then it is gone. With no trace whatsoever that the message ever existed. This could be bad if you type a long message...

This is a really great hint!

I'm having the same "bug" as some of the others, that Mail will send the message with the bogus email-adress I gave it. But then again, this is a nice new feature for Mail, now one can send mails with fake adresses. :o)

As for the original purpose of the hint, just having the account selection highlighted in red works for me!
