A fix for Oxford chip set and Maxtor hard drive issues

I bought a new enclosure including an Oxford 912 chip set (this hint will work for the Oxford 911/922 chip set, too). Here comes the problem: The Maxtor hard drive I installed was recognized on the USB, but not on FireWire. To fix this, the chip set has to be patched from UDMA 6 to UDMA 5:

  1. Download the "MAC OS X OXFORD UTILITY" from this page at cooldrives.com. Unzip the archive after downloading.
  2. Turn the enclosure on and plug it in on the FireWire port.
  3. Open uploadergui.jar (Tested with Java 1.4.2) and click on "Modify Configuration Inf..."
  4. Click on "Advanced" and set all four combo boxes to "UDMA 5."
  5. Click on "OK" and then click on "Upload Changes."
You are done, restart enclosure. This is a known solution and is suggested by the Oxford manufacturers.

[robg adds: I don't have any enclosures with which to test this hint...]
