A fix for Oxford chip set and Maxtor hard drive issues System
I bought a new enclosure including an Oxford 912 chip set (this hint will work for the Oxford 911/922 chip set, too). Here comes the problem: The Maxtor hard drive I installed was recognized on the USB, but not on FireWire. To fix this, the chip set has to be patched from UDMA 6 to UDMA 5:
  1. Download the "MAC OS X OXFORD UTILITY" from this page at cooldrives.com. Unzip the archive after downloading.
  2. Turn the enclosure on and plug it in on the FireWire port.
  3. Open uploadergui.jar (Tested with Java 1.4.2) and click on "Modify Configuration Inf..."
  4. Click on "Advanced" and set all four combo boxes to "UDMA 5."
  5. Click on "OK" and then click on "Upload Changes."
You are done, restart enclosure. This is a known solution and is suggested by the Oxford manufacturers.

[robg adds: I don't have any enclosures with which to test this hint...]

How can you tell what the chipset of the device is? I have a Maxtor 200 Gig one touch backup on my mac and it seems to work fine, but I have no idea what the chipset is.

I have an Oxford external enclosure that I use for a Maxtor hard drive (what are the odds!), and it intermittently works with firewire. It appears to be a chip set of 900, or possibly 922? This hint doesn't address my problem but it did bring to my attention that I could update the firmware on my drive. I found the necessary firmware files and instructions here: http://eshop.macsales.com/Reviews/Framework.cfm?page=/hardwareandnews/oxford/oxfordandpanther.html . I'll try to remember to post back here if I notice it working any better than before. Thanks.

"How can you tell what the chipset of the device is?"

if you open the enclosure and look at the bridgeboard you will see the large chip which is the controller chip

if you are using a 200-250G drive, then you are using either an Oxford 911, 911+, 912, or 922 chip

Apparently the 911+ in my Mactor 200 giger does not have an associated bin file. The drive appears to work perfectly anyway.

GraniteDigital has announced their FW400 bridge boards (Oxford 911) have incompatible firmware with Tiger. They are expecting to release a firmware update by end of June to correct this. Their FW800 products are not affected, and everything works fine under 10.3.

Here I thought this was it...

But no. My enclosure works with USB 2.0, but much slower than I'd like. It also has 2 FW800 ports, running on the Oxford 912 chipset. But when plugged in via FW800, NOTHING works. The drive spins up, but does not mount, and the enclosure does not show up in the firmware updater I downloaded from the site above.

Is it the enclosrre? The FW800 ports? Again, it works fine with USB, but with FW800 it does not show up at all - not in the firmware, system profiler, or anything. I also tried it with a FW800 to FW400 cable (to a FW400 port) and still nothing. I know the ports are fine as I have other drives which work. I tried connecting the drive both with other drives connected and solo. Nothing is working. Any ideas? This is a new enclosure.

Thanks,
ScottieB
