10.4: Open the CD drive via the F12 Dashboard key System 10.4
Tiger only hintI thought the new Dashboard removed the ability to open the CD drive when it took over the F12 key. It turns out that it didn't! Simply hold down the F12 key for a second or two instead of just hitting it, and the CD drive will open.

[robg adds: This feature has actually worked this way for a long time, but with the advent of Dashboard and its use of F12, I thought it might be worth repeating. It will only work, I believe, on keyboards that lack the eject key.]

Use the Fn key for iBooks

On my iBook I have to press the 'fn' key while pressing the F12 key to make dashboard appear. The CD drive eject still works the way it did before (using the F12 key without 'fn').

Yeah, except on iBooks with the eject key on the keyboard, otherwise the function button has to be pushed -- just remap the key to something easier and otherwise unused.

This behaviour is only if you DONT have an eject key. If, on say a powerbook, since you DO have an eject key, holding down F12 will bring up dashboard and releasing it gets rid of it. very handy.

Another way (and the way I have my iBook set up) is to assign the dashboard to F8 instead.

At home I use an external display, mouse and keyboard with my PowerBook, so F12 and Eject are separate keys. Oh, I just noticed that the PB also now has separate keys for that. Hmm, my old Ti didn't.... :-)

I'm having this problem with my PowerMac G5 and Apple Pro keyboard. It does have an eject key, but when I push the F12 key to bring up Dashboard, it also opens the CD tray. Annoying. The eject key also does this. I wish I could disable the F12 key from opening the CD tray.
