10.4: Get UK TV listings with Safari's RSS viewer System 10.4
Tiger only hintThere are going to be quite a few of these "uses of the RSS viewer" tips for Safari, so I thought I would get in there and detail one of the neatest ones: seeing UK TV listings.

Here's how I did it...
  1. Create a bookmark folder called "tv" or whatever you like
  2. Put the following bookmarks into the folder:
  3. Click on the new "tv" bookmarks folder and select View All RSS Articles from the drop down method (or use this shortcut).
  4. Click on the right-hand link in the RSS viewer navigation area titled Sort By, and set it to Titled.
Nice simple, ad-free TV listings. You could simplify this process by just bookmarking: this link, which is all of them in one go.

Tip: See bleb.org's RSS page for some nice tips on how to use the RSS feeds and get tommorow's telly and all the satellite channels, etc.

Potentially a very useful tip for me.

No - I can't access the website at all either at the moment.

Doesn't work... sounds great, but maybe a some R&D before posting would be a good idea?

Unfortunately this hint's coincided with me taking the server offline briefly to upgrade the hard disk before the current one completely fails.

All being well, it should be back tomorrow (it already having taken longer than expected)!

Sorry for the inconvenience,

Andrew

heh.. Thats called sods law..
I actually posted that a while ago now - There has been a bit of a backlog on the macosxhints front..

From a little more user testing over the past week or so since testing there is a few downsides to this hint:
  • The biggest bug is that ordering by title/today isnt enough. the problem comes when there are programs on after midnight.. they will come first in the list rather than last.. not a big problem for me - Its sad to admit that Im in bed by 11!
  • If you dont check it everyday youll get a really big number in the feeds dropdown. Thats not really a problem but for some reason it winds me up (its not the only ones to do it.. my del.icio.us bookmark folder is nearing 4 figures now)

hope you all find it useful when Andrew gets his beautiful code working again - top work!

Now all sorted! :-)

Any comments or suggestions on the RSS feed, let me know. One that's already been suggested is adding a "(Film)" tag to the end of titles of films. Something else I'm keen to do is a now and/or next.

I tried this and it did work successfully. However, there's now a really good UK television listings widget, which you can get from the Apple widget page. Thus far, it's the best widget I've seen.
