This was successfully completed using OSX 10.4. I just bought a T-Mobile Motorola V188 phone. It's cool because it works with a standard mini -> big USB cable (and no, I don't know how to iSync it yet). I did use it to connect to the internet at 56KB, though. I had to sign up for T-Mobile internet package (you can cancel at any time and they don't mess with your contract).
Here are the steps to set this up. I worked it out with their tech experts. this is not yet documented for the public.
- Visit Taniwha.org and scroll to "Scripts for Motorola GPRS phones." Download the file and put "Motorola GPRS CID1" in your scripts folder: /Library/Modem Scripts/
- Connect the phone to the computer via the USB cable
- Open System Preferences and click on Network. It should say that it detects the v188
- On the PPP tab, set the following:
- Service provider: tmobile (or whatever you want)
- Account Name: leave blank
- Password: leave blank
- Telephone number: internet2.voicestream.com
- Alternate number: leave blank
PPP options:
- (Advanced Options:) Uncheck ALL
- unchecked = send PPP echo packets
- unchecked = Use TCP header compression
- unchecked = Connect using a terminal window (command line)
- unchecked = Prompt for password after dialing
- unchecked = Use verbose logging
Now click Apply Changes.
- On the Modem Tab:
- Modem: I had success with Motorola GPRS CID1.
- check = Enable error correction and compression in modem
- unchecked = Wait for dial tone before dialing.
Remember to Apply Changes!
Now go back to PPP Tab and click on Connect. The Internet Connect window will open; hit Connect. Presto, it should work...
