10.4: Resolve strange POP 'offline' errors in Mail.app Apps
Tiger only hintFor everyone getting the following strange message in online POP mailboxes:

"The message from First Last [name@domain.com] concerning "Mail Subject has not been downloaded from the server. You need to take this account online in order to download it."

Navigate to your User/Library/Mail/Mailboxes directory. Enter the offending sub-directory / mailbox. Normal *directory_name*.mbox directories should contain a subdirectory called Messages. Your mailbox containing the mail with the above message should have another directory cryptically named something like Messages-XT23@#442s. This directory should contain all the mail prompting the display of the above message.

Copy those messages (*.emlx files) from the oddly named Messages-XT23@#442s directory to the normal Messages directory. Now in Mail, select the mailbox in question, then choose Mailbox: Rebuild. Your messages should appear fine now. As always, back up your Directory.mbox root directory before doing this!

10.4: Resolve strange POP 'offline' errors in Mail.app

This works well, the only problem I had was that some of the mail's I had in the strangely named folder were duplicate names for ones in the normal folder, so I had to choose if I wanted to ignore them or replace them. I decided to ignore them, and as far as I can tell, I'm not missing any mails. I opened up a few of the ones in the strangely named folder with text edit, and took a sample of the text. Then searched for that text within mail, and they all showed up without any problems, so I assume I did the right thing.

Sadly, I have that problem in Mail, but I don't find any folders with strange names -- just "Messages" folders.

Mail has been a real pig, and a pain to use, ever since I upgraded to Panther. I want to tell it what Ordell told Louis right before he murdered him [movie: Jackie Brown]: "You used to be BEAUTIFUL, man!"

Nowadays I feel like shooting Mr. Mail.
