10.4: Use Advanced print protocol options System 10.4
Tiger only hintAs I was trying to set up printers in my recent 10.4 install, I realized that Apple moved the "super-secret" advanced print protocol options.

Under Panther, to get the Advanced menu options (like "Internet Printing Protocol using IPP") to appear, you had to option-click the Add button in the Printer Setup Utility.

Now with Tiger, option-clicking the Add button doesn't seem to do anything. Instead, you need to option-click the "More Printers..." button at the bottom of the Printer Browser window that opens when you click Add. The "Advanced" option will now be available in the top drop-down menu of the panel that slides down.

I dont understand, its always been right there. In Tiger, I click add, then choose the button «IP Printer» and there you go. No need to option click more printer. It was also that simple in panther.

I don't understand this hint at all. There are two tabs in the printer browser, the first being "Default Browser" which shows automatically discovered printers (USB, Bonjour, Appletalk). The second tab is "IP Printer" which allows you to enter the address and other information for printers that cannot be automatically discovered. The options there include IPP, LPD and any vendor-specific protocols. Am I missing something here?

Just to clarify: The original hint is correct.

If you want advanced options for configuration, you need to option-click the "More Printers..." button. This will allow you to choose from all possible options by selecting the "Advanced" entry at the bottom of the drop down menu.

I was thinking of using this to set up an USB printer that was not connected to my Mac and was thus not discovered automatically, but as there was one parameter I did not know, I decided against it and to wait until the printer would actually be connected.

Basically, the standard print dialog allows to easily set-up all printers that are discovered automatically (USB, Bonjour/Rendezvous, ...) and some more. The additional button for IP printing covers pretty much all other cases where the printer cannot be discovered automatically. But still, it's always nice to be able to do some advanced settings, and sometimes it's necessary.
