10.4: Add login items from dock System 10.4
Tiger only hintTo easily add an application to the list of items that automatically opens upon login, try this...

Control- (or right-) click on the application icon in the dock, and check "Open at Login." This works with both running and non-running applications in the Dock, but does not work with applications located elsewhere, including the applications directory.

[robg adds: This is a simple hint, yes, but it's also a great timesaver that you may not be aware of. In 10.3, it took a number of clicks and drags to add a program to your list of login items. Now it's a simple control-click...]

Methinks there's an obvious typo in the hint, which if it's ever going to be published, ought to be fixed ;-)

One little letter... though I suppose it could have been another letter and the same erroneous meaning would still, um, pop up.

I had to read it a couple of times more, just for laughs.

I wonder how long the typo will be "C"isplayed online?

The typo was my fault -- either I added it while editing, or I missed it completely when reviewing the tip. Either way, sorry about that.

I'll leave the comments, though, just so folks can have a laugh over what it once read :)

Thanks - Yes I've used this short cut several times under Tiger and it does save time. I only wished it also gave the option to "hide" at login launching as well. Ah well, maybe in 10.4.5 we will see this addition.

You can still set Login items to hide on launch, tho, by going to Accounts in Sysem Prefs and setting them there, like in Panther.

I find that you only have to click and hold on a Dock item to bring up the menu that allows you to Open at Login. Don't need to Control-click. Both ways bring up the same menu items.

What is not so obvious, that you can actually remove the item from login items. Try to open System Preferences > Accounts > Login Items and see the item showing and disappearing while playing with the item's menu in the Dock.

Notice this hint doesn't work with some applications which handle their startup themselves, e.g. Skype.
