Program buttons on Logitech MX900 bluetooth mouse System
I'm not sure why Logitech don't support the Mac with MX900 software, and until now this has been the source of much frustration. The mouse works, and integrates well into Exposé with no extra software ... but integrating it into other cool apps, like Desktop Manager, has been impossible.

The answer is ControllerMate, by OrderedBytes. It lets you map the functions of all sorts of controllers, including the Logitech MX900. It's shareware, but the developer has done a great job, and it made the MX900 fully usable for me.

[robg adds: I get a fair number of email inquiries on the MX900, but haven't had much advice to offer folks ... so here's one possible alternative, which I have not tested...]

Ironically, Microsoft mice come with great Mac drivers. I've sent several messages over the years to Logitech about this, they just don't seem to care.

Microsoft mice comes with great drivers because they licensed their technology from Alessandro Levi Montalcini, who creates USB Overdrive. Microsoft didn't create ONE BIT of that technology.

But the good news is that no matter WHAT mouse you use, the #1 very best driver that you can possibly download for your mouse is USB Overdrive.

Go to www.usboverdrive.com to get it.

Except for Bluetooth mice, like the MS or the Logitech, since these are not detected as USB mice usboverdrive can't help much, but there is a hope, version 10.4 will support Bluetooth.

ControllerMate 2.0 appears to work okay with my MX900 mouse. All I wanted to do was program buttons 4, 5, 6 with keyboard actions. Better performance and reliability than GamePadCompanion. Been waiting for bluetooth in USB Overdrive X, but perhaps this will do.

Ok, so I know this is a Mac hint site, but just in case anyone is reading this that might know, I'm looking for information on installing my MX900 on my Gentoo box. I tried the one online tutorial but no luck. If you have any information, please message me (evilglowingapple@gmail.com) and let me know. Thanks!

By the way, great hint. It's great to finally be able to customize my mouse buttons. It's always worked in games, but until now never in general applications like Finder and Safari.
