10.4: Remove the Google search box in Safari Web Browsers
Tiger only hintWith Sogudi, one can perform Google (and all other types of) searches from the main location field in Safari. As such, I prefer a minimalist address bar, and was disappointed I couldn't easily remove the Google field in Safari 2.0.

Poking around in Browser.nib (located in Safari.app: Control-click and choose Show Package Contents: Contents: Resources: English.lproj (or whatever language you're using), I met with failure. Then I found ToolbarItems.nib in the same location. By editing that nib file with Interface Builder, one can modify or remove the location and/or google fields to their satisfaction. The Developer Tools must be installed to do this...

View > Customize Address Bar > drag out Google Search box from real toolbar = no Google Search box.

Is there also a way to drag in other search engines - similar to the firefox technique?

You could approximate that Firefox functionality with AcidSearch. Although not "officially" released for 10.4 yet, the author claims that it will run -- albeit somewhat buggy in parts. Hope it gets updated soon.

You can't separate the location bar and the google box in Safari 2.0.

The Google search box is tied to the address bar because Google paid Apple a bunch of money.

Apparently User Interface Design has a price even with Apple.

I noticed that in Interface Builder, when working with the hinted NIB. So how do we modify this thing in Interface Builder to ditch the Google box w/o losing the address bar?

Open ToolbarItems.nib > Open 'Toolbar items' under the 'Instances' tab > Double-click the google search bar to highlight it > Hit backspace > Save

This seems to disable the "Search In Google" contextual menu item. I don't really care since I use Saft for context menu searching.

Perhaps this tip is beyond my skill level. I can remap the connections, but can't actually separate and remove the search field. Did you delete the default set and re-create the address bar from scratch?

Ah! Nevermind, it is within my skill set. It required a double-click instead of a single. Search bar deleted, thanks for the tip!

If you type an unknown address into safari (e.g. "mac os x hints") it will perform a google search on the string, so there's no need to use "goo mac os x hints" if you are using Sogudi.

This doesn't seem to work in Safari 3/Leopard. I can't get interface builder to separate the two boxes no matter what I try. I can only delete them both.

So I guess this hint really is 10.4 only :)

Only with Safari 2.

I was running Safari 2 on 10.4 and was able to do this. I was very happy... until I installed Safari 3 and the Google search bar returned (I'm still running 10.4 by the way). I can't seem to find any way to remove it.

I don't use Google as I can get more relevant results with other search engines, so why do I have to have a useless search bar on every browser window. I don't want to go back to Safari 2 though - search finally works the way it should, tabs finally work the way they should, spellcheck finally works the way it should.

Of course none of this would even be an issue if Apple hadn't sold out to Google. The search bar should be customisable like in Firefox.
