10.4: Remove yellow from the Print Supplies button System 10.4
Tiger only hintOne of the most annoying "features" of 10.4 is the new Supplies button in the Print dialog that spams the user to buy ink from Apple. When the system detects diminishing supplies, it highlights the button an eye-catching yellow, as seen at right. This hint disables the yellow highlighting, leaving the functionality intact, but giving the user a more peaceful experience.

Note that this hint mucks about with a system framework, thus follow at your own risk.

In the terminal, enter
$ cd /System/Library/Frameworks/Carbon.framework/Frameworks/Print.framework/
$ sudo mv YellowPushBtn_Normal.tiff YellowPushBtn_Normal.tiff_
$ sudo mv YellowPushBtn_Pressed.tiff YellowPushBtn_Pressed.tiff_
By adding the underscores, the system won't be able to find the yellow versions, and the normal button will remain. Replace English.lproj with your localization, and enjoy a slightly less intrusive Print dialog. You can copy the files back to their original names if you want to restore the default behavior.

[robg adds: I haven't noticed this button yet; it seems neither of my printers report their status. So I added the screenshot of the button just so you can see how really bright it is...]

I decided this is a really cool feature. It doesn't require that I actually order the supplies from Apple, but it's a very helpful reminder. Calling it "One of the most annoying features" is a bit of a stretch, kind of like saying "everyone hates the new mail interface".

Ugh, I'm glad someone likes it.

Thanks for the hint, Anonymous/rob! To me, this is the most insulting type of "feature" -- added clutter for the benefit of a vendor, not a user, sitting there next to frequently-used buttons and hijacking my workflow when I accidently click on it. I can't believe it turns yellow! (I'm actually hoping to remove the button altogether, and will post if I figure that out...)

It's like the HP printers that open a complaint box every time you print (or stop working altogether) when there's plenty of usable toner left, but little enough that they think they can get away with nagging you to send them more money.

This feature wasn't proposed by interface designers -- it was proposed by the marketing dept.

If I were interested in being chromatically notified of diminishing print supplies, I would change the color of YellowPushBtn_*.tiff. To my eyes, the button looks like vial of a readily-producible human fluid.

In 10.5.2 the path to the YellowPushBtn pressed and normal changed to:

For localization just do a locate for YellowPushBtn_Normal.tiff and follow the rest of this hint.
