10.4: Fix a Spotlight/International keyboard shortcut issue System 10.4
Tiger only hintSpotlight is a great new addition to OS X, but if you use alternative input languages toggling with Command-Space, you'll run into trouble.

If you go into the Keyboard Shortcuts tab of the Keyboard and Mouse System Preferences panel, you will notice that Command-Space is assigned to both Spotlight and alternate text input. However, changing it here will not permanently keep your new key commands. The way to fix this is to go into the Spotlight pane under System Preferences, and you'll see a checkbox for Spotlight keyboard shortcut. Change that to whatever suits you, and now you should have no problems.

It's not the best hint, but I think it'll save some of us some time who are new to Tiger.

You are certainly not alone. I use a Dvorak keyboard layout, and of course my muscle memory has problems with this change. There's plenty of room for simple hints like these as we all get up to speed.

Thanks

Didn't happen to me - I use Dvorak, and Spotlight defaulted to Ctrl-Space; I assumed it was because the Input Menu was displayed...

I know lots of people who had their Spotlight key default to ctrl+space, myself included. This is of course rather inconvenient to users of many IDEs where ctrl+space is context completion.

Context completion on Mac is of course F5 (bound to clash with something) or option+esc (or just esc - even worse) in Xcode2.

I do sometimes wonder who checks these things at Apple.

My spotlight got remapped to opt+space because I use cmd+space for language change.

Perhaps that is better than ctl+space for those users who need ctl+space for something else?

I have a separate but related problem in that I've seemed to disable my Spotlight key commands completely for both the window and menu. Nothing I apply in the Spotlight Control Panel will work and now I can only access Spotlight by clicking on the menubar button. What up?
