10.4: Add Nokia 9300 iSync support Apps
Tiger only hintHere is how to get some basic support for the Nokia 9300 in iSync in 10.4. This should work for all SyncML/Series 80 phones, however, it was only tested under the 9300.
 1. Open a Terminal window.
 2. Use sudo to become root.
 3. Change into this directory using cd: /Applications: iSync.app: Contents: PlugIns: ApplePhoneConduit.syncdevice: Contents: PlugIns: PhoneModelsSync.phoneplugin: Contents: Resources
 4. Make a copy of an existing image file: cp NOKNGAGE.tiff NOK9300.tiff. Any file would do, as long as iSync can find a file ... if anyone makes a 9300 icon, please send-it over!
 5. Edit MetaClasses.plist and add this section of code to the file.
 6. Quit iSync if it's open, and delete any existing 9300 pairing.
 7. Run the BluetTooth Discover Assistant again and add the phone, making sure to check the iSync option.
 8. Open isync, and run a sync; it will display an error asking you to upload the "AppleSyncAgent." Once it's on the phone, install the app from the messages, and it will add an iSync Config icon on the desk (for obvious reasons, the app will not run on the series 80).
 9. Run iSync, and enjoy the new data on your phone.

Authored by: deebee on Apr 30, '05 03:47:29AM

Great hint! I have been trying to adapt it to get it to work with my Nokia 6630. I get get as far as pairing the device, and installing the iSync Config software, but when I try to sync I get a messaage saying that iSync config cannot be found on the phone. The software is on the 6630's desktop and seems to be running OK.

I get the feeling this might be something I'll have to wait for 10.4.1 for, but any help would be apreciated.

I did a manual install of the conduit on the phone (I'm using the Japanese Voda variant that rejects all non-signed apps).

I installed to the E drive (card) - maybe it should be on the phone, but I can't even get the service to start on the phone. 10.4.1 - let's hope! Maybe the .sis file needs to be hacked, but that's beyond my feeble powers.

I can confirm that this also works with Nokia 3230. Follow the instructions in the text file in the original hint, just exchange the numbers 9300 for 3230, and off you go - at last! And Apple, thanks for nothing!!

Regarding my previous post on Nokia 3230, Im sorry to say that I have to take it back - it doesn't work! It starts to sync, but fails after a while. Maybe it uses a different protocol than Nokia 9300? I'm going to try with com.nokia.serie60v1 instead. Sorry for posting without testing thoroughly...

Thanks.

CAN ANYONE PLEASE TELL ME IF IT'S POSSIBLE TO USE THE SAME METHOD, OR SOMETHING SIMILAR, WHEN IN PANTHER?!

I'M DESPERATELY TRYING TO SYNC MY NOKIA 3230. THE DEVICE CAN PAIR BUT ADDING 'NEW DEVICE' DOESN'T REVEAL THE PHONE IN iSYNC. THE OPTION TO USE WITH ADDRESS BOOK IS ALSO GREYED OUT IN THE ORIGINAL BLUETOOTH SET-UP SETTINGS.

HELP! PLEASE.

Hi Matt,

I also recently bought a Samsung sgh e 720 with SyncML. For the moment I'm using Panther and I don't have even yet a bluetooth dongle on my i-Book.
Before upgrading (and even if) to Tiger, I would like to know how good the sync-ing is with your Samsung; only the address book ???? Can I transfer photos and music (AAC) files ???

Thanks in advance,
Theo (France)

How well it works?
Authored by: jole on Apr 30, '05 05:33:28PM

This is a great hint - I have been waiting for 9300 support in iSync to be able to switch from P900 to Nokia 9300. Before getting the new phone I would like to know how well the iSync works with Nokia 9300: Are there any reliability problems? Does it sync addresses, phonebook pictures, todos, long calendar notes, etc?

doesn't work on a nokia 9500. (big brother of the 9300).

Isync produces the error:
The connection was lost while talking to the device.
Device "9500" synchronization failed

and the phone produces an error of KERN-EXEC 'reason 3'.

Has anyone actually got this working on a 9300/9500 ?

Oh, the one thing it does successfully is wipe out any existing contacts, so beware if you entered them by hand :)

Hi,
I never used the sudo command and it seems that I can't get it to work as in the first post... I tried it with logging in as root and manualy editing the file, but I can't get it to work with my nokia 9500... With the BT setup assistent I can't even choose iSync. What am I doing wrong?

Can somebody explain this to me more cleary (babysteps please).
I can make the icons if you're still looking for them?

Thanks,

You don´t actually have use terminal commands to make the modifications. Open the iSync program package content.(right click or ctrl+click on isync icon) Browse to the

>contents>PlugIns>ApplePhoneConduit.syncdevice>contents>Plugins>phonemodelssync.phoneplugin>contents>Resources

Open the MetaClasses.plist in textedit and make sure you are editing in plain text mode>> add the modifications shown earlier. Make also sure that you have a nok9300.tiff file added to the same folder.

It is possible you added the data to the wrong bit of the MetaClasses.plist file. Try adding it before the last two lines, i.e. the final:

</dict>
</plist>
Make sure you don't have isync open when you do this, and make a backup of the metaclasses.plist file before you edit it!

I've got it to work!

First I had to empty my contacts dbase (contacts.cdb). After that I also deleted the cmgr.ini file and reinstalled the AppleSyncAgent. After these steps everything is working!

Thanks all!

I'm now creating the icon files.

Seems that upgrading os x ("iSync") revert the changes. Use these files on your own risk!

9500 syncsw perfectly!
Authored by: ae on May 05, '05 07:50:44AM

I had the same mistake (Kernec, reason 3, no sync, etc...). What I did that it worked:
1. delete all contacts in 9500
2. delete sync agent from 9500
3. delete 9500 from isync
4. turn out bluetooth on mac and 9500
5. close isync on mac
THEN I DID:
1. Connect mac and 9500 per bluetooth
2. put and doubleklick 9500 to isync
3. try isync (it will not function but writing the message to install isync agent on phone)
4. Install sync agent on 9500 (never mind bad messsages)
5. write 1 Contact into 9500 (Name, Phone, adress, etc...)
6. start sync (NOT the Option to "delete" data on 9500, but the Option to put data together!!!!!!!!!)
7. mark contacts, calender and sync. Voila.

That was the way I sync and it works perfectly on Nokia 9500. Hope I could help someone with the same problems I had.

This appears to work for me as well on my 9500, but I'm hesitant to run this as "production" because of the inability to drive the "iSync Config" tool. Can anyone say what the config tool does? I'm guessing a few settings here and there, but are they important?

Anyone know where the tool came from and any chance of getting it to work on a Series 80?

I only have it running for 24h now. but it works very well and very reliable for me. I sync calendars, contacts and contact photos.

And it is really fast. Much faster than mRouter with older Nokias (3650, 6600, ...).

So far so good :-) Hope you will find a fix.

Great hint and fun to be hacking Tiger..!
Unfortunately..., after succesfully uploading the new app (AppleSyncAgent-s60v2.sis) the new program, called 'iSync Config' didn't run, but complained 'Unable to find the specified object'..(?) I attempted to sync nevertheless: it started to run optimistically, but then, while actually changing the data, it quit with the messages: 'Error An unexpected exception occured while synchronizing the device.' and 'Error Device "My Nokia 9300" synchronization failed'. Strangely enough, many address book data were entered from the Nokia 9300 into the Addresss Book..!

What to try next? Successful sync'ing with my Mac means I keep my 9300, otherwise, it's gone!
Thanks, Gerard

First time run on the phone can be tricky, sometimes just trying to run the iSync config tool on the phone (oviously it will fail with an error) solves the problem, or removing the iSync config on the phone and re-installing it...

What about 6230?
Authored by: schvenk on May 06, '05 09:15:34AM

Has anyone gotten this working with a Nokia 6230? I'm thinking of exchanging my Motorola v551 for one.

(I like the v551's form factor and it does work with iSync, but it has a few irritating things about it, including lack of support for Salling Clicker.)

Also, are there any drawbacks to this method?

What about 6230?
Authored by: gseidler on Jul 05, '05 04:36:04PM

I tryed to use the tip with the Nokia 6230. The problem is when you have to install the Apple Sync Agent on the phone, since 6230 is a series 40. I think iSync doesn't have a series 40 Sync Agent. The phone simply doesn't understand neither series 60 v1 or v2.0 .sis files used on the tip. I guess we are out of luck, your best bet is to buy PhoneDirector.

Please correct me if I'm wrong anyone.

This worked perfectly with the Nokia 3230 after spending hours if not days trying to find a 3rd party application to allow me to sync my mobile.

I'm no expert and had never used terminal before, it took a while to figure out and i managed to create a Nokia 3230 logo and install it to... so, to save anybody else the hastle i've copied my whole modified iSync application and compressed it - if anybody wants a copy you can simply replace your iSync (version 2 for Mac OS 1.4) with this copy.

you can download it at:

http://homepage.mac.com/amckillican/FileSharing9.html

DO NOT USE THIS VERSION OF iSync unless you have Mac OS 10.4! it replaced iSync 2

Any problems, let me know - amckillican@mac.com

Thanks for your responce.
Yes I have done both steps, I believe I'm not adding the info to the meta file properly.
That is why I whish I could have someone send me there correctly added file.
What I did was add the text provided to the end of the document, but it's not working.
And I copied and pasted an existing nokia tif and renamed it, but no dice.

THANK YOU

The instructions in the original post are a tiny bit abbreviated. You need to insert the fragment of code BEFORE the final

</dict>
</plist>

in the plist file. If you do that, then when you pair the device, the pairing program will see it as a valid iSync device and you'll get the check box and everything will be able to find it.

Every time you edit a plist file, you should run plutil on it to see if you've broken something.

I have exactly the same problem, although I am trying to use a 6680. I have copied a tiff file, and amended the metaclasses.plist, but when I pair the device, the option to use iSync is greyed out.

Driving me quietly insane, so any help much appreciated.

at the first sync all things are going very well.

But on the second sync i'll get at first a information on my 9500 "that the system is closed" ?????

And at least on my PB under iSync i'll get the message that iSync can't sync to my 9500.

Did someone of you have a idea what happend?

Thanks, Pit

For my own, I had many problems to innitiate a sycronisation, but know it works well between my 9300 and Tiger. So be carefull for:
- cleanly type in the .plist
- hard reset your nokia before the first sychro: put out the battery, and on NOKIA logo type ctrl+shift+F.

crisis over, thanks to some help from Douglas even I now have success. thanks for the useful posts, not I don't have to throw the 9500 away!
Basic moral of the story, re-boot the Mac, reset the 9500 (remove battery), remove any pairing (if it didn't work first time, start again from scratch) and keep percivering.

I had to reinstall the AppleSyncAgent on my phone 11 times!!

Now it's just perfect.

One other thing Douglas suggested (that may have helped) was to sync in small parts. Start by just syncing one calendar (and no contacts) and then as it succeeds, add more and more calendars (if you have more), then finally adding the Contacts (typically more information). Now very very happy!

Ok so I got my 9300... this phone's a beaut! but I JUST HATE the lack of support there is for the mac...
I have some basic questions:
1.- I already "hacked" isync, love how it works... but is there something else? I mean has anyone found out any interesting features using a mac?
2.- Do I always need to use bluetooth? or is there a way to use the date cable...
3.- I have read about "IP passthrough" to surf the web on the phone through your computer's connection.... Can I do that in a mac?
4.- MOST IMPORTANT. could I buy like an external wireless card for the phone? is there a way to surf the web without using the gprs service?
Thanks
Best Regards

10.4: Add Nokia 9300 iSync support
Authored by: lthuring on Aug 19, '05 04:35:31AM

Finally having upgraded to Tiger on my G4 laptop I wanted to make it work with 9300 as described in the first email. All was looking fine, with a warning that more > 5% of the contacts on the mac would be changed.
Then I discovered that iSync had overwritten the calendar and contacts with its own (less important) ones. Argggh! I tried to restore these from a 9300 backup, but this fails with the info that it cannot be done since the contacts and calendar files are "coprighted". Turning the 9300 off and on to delete them locally does not help either. Then these files are constantly in use even if the corresponding apps have not been started... How do I get rid of them in the 9300 so I can restore again? Thanks!

BTW, why on earth are entries marked as "copyrighted" from the mac? Also I had assumed that running iSync the first time would merge the calendars. My bad perhaps.

This tutorial works great for syncing 9500, too. I also didn't know how to work with the terminal and followed the steps by using mouse clicks, folders and files. Isyncing is working perfect with my nokia 9500 phone and tiger.

I also created the nokia 9500 phone icon for iSync. Feel free to copy it:

I know this was asked before, but I didn't see it answered: if you set up a 9300 in this way, does iSync sync To-Do's and all Address Book fields (e.g. street address, etc)? I'm considering getting one but I'd need to know this first.

Thanks,

In response to BeerCake and to IvanX, this fix does no longer work for a Nokia 9300, with iSync 2.2.1 and Tiger 10.4.3 :-(

I implemented this fix exaclty as xth and thoth explain (excellent hint) and it worked great - total sync using isync for iCal, and Address Book ... but I think the Tiger update killed it.
Now the Nokia 9300 is seen by Tiger, that decides I can only use Address Book (with some wierd way of auto sync) and it gives me some kind of CTI link with popups accompanying incoming calls !

Enough to say I am frustrated as I have now lost the iCal and Address Book synchronisation.

If any of you need to keep this, avoid the auto updates !

Perhaps somebody will find how to 'update' this fix to adapt to the new software versions ? I hope so !

Bye all,
Peter

Just copy the iSync 2.1.1 Application from another machine and your 9300 syncing will return.

I did this:
- Deleted the pairing on the 9300 and the Mac
- Copied the iSync 2.1.1 Application from another machine and dropped it into the the Application folder on my 10.4.6 Mac
- Installed the free 9300 sync plugin http://the.taoofmac.com/static/Nokia9300iSyncPlugin.zip
- Pair up the phone and the Mac again and all my syncing worked again

by the way, i guess no one knows of a trick like this that would make the 3230 isync-able with panther? thanks.

10.4: Add Nokia 9300 iSync support: Babysteps!
Authored by: xth on Nov 08, '05 11:32:41AM

That was extremely helpful and worked as advertised for a 9500. Thanks a lot! Here's the same set of instructions in 'baby steps', for those who asked for it (sorry no French though ;-)

(0) you must do the following using an account with admin rights
(1) open Terminal - you'll find it in the Utilties folder inside Applications
(2) type "sudo -s" (without the ") and hit return
(3) type in your password when asked and hit return - now you are running as the 'root' user
(4) type "cd /Applications/iSync.app/Contents/PlugIns/ApplePhoneConduit.syncdevice/Contents/PlugIns/PhoneModelsSync.phoneplugin/Contents/Resources/" (again, without the ") and hit return [sorry about the page widening!]
(5) type "cp NOKNGAGE.tiff NOK9500.tiff" (again, without the ") and hit return - as thoth explained in the original post, you can type any other file name instead of NOKNGAGE, it doesn't really matter. And adapt NOK9500.tif to whatever phone you are trying this on.
(6) now you need to edit the MetaClasses.plist file. You can do this in a variety of ways.
(*) within Terminal, by using pico (an easy to use command line editor). Don't be scared - unlike scarier command line editors, pico shows you what all the keys do at the bottom of the screen (bear in mind that ^ means 'hit the ctrl key').
Just type "pico MetaClasses.plist" (without the ") and hit return
(*) with TextEdit. Type "open -a /Applications/TextEdit.app/ MetaClasses.plist" (without the ") and hit return
(7) once you got the file open, paste in this bit at the 5th line, right after the <plist version="1.0">. The formatting doesn't look too XML-like, but it still works. Alternatively, use the code from thoth's original post.
<dict>:
<key>com.nokia.9500</key>
<dict>
<key>Identification</key>
<dict>
<key>com.apple.gmi+gmm</key>
<string>Nokia+Nokia 9500</string>
</dict>
<key>InheritsFrom</key>
<array>
<string>com.nokia.serie60v2.0</string>
</array>
<key>Services</key>
<array>
<dict>
<key>ServiceName</key>
<string>com.apple.model</string>
<key>ServiceProperties</key>
<dict>
<key>ModelName</key>
<string>9500</string>
<key>PhoneIcon</key>
<string>NOK9500.tiff</string>
</dict>
</dict>
</array>
</dict>
Note that I've done this for a 9500, and I used NOK9500.tiff from before - it should be easy to adapt this to a different phone.
(8) Save the file.
(9) Delete any existing 9500 pairing from iSync, then quit iSync
(10) in System Preferences, Bluetooth, Devices, click on 'Set up new Device' and follow the steps again.
(11) Open isync, and run a sync; it will display an error asking you to upload the "AppleSyncAgent." click on OK.
(12) On the phone, go into Personal, Messaging - there should be a Bluetooth message (that would be the AppleSyncAgent)
(13) double click on it, and install it (don't save it). Ignore all the scary messages from the 9500
(14) run iSync - et voila' ! Bob's your uncle!

Once again, thanks to thoth for the original post!

Seem so that this thing works after the recent upgrade (to v2.2). I just added the 9500 key to Metaclasses.plist and reinstalled the isync application. I removed the existing 9500 device and reinstalled it, and performed the merging sync.

No information lost. Couple of unnecessary changes, mostly regarding the picture of the contact.

iSync and Nokia 7710? [10.4: Add Nokia 9300 iSync support: Babysteps!]
Authored by: Mårten on May 22, '06 01:14:21AM

Being a dork,

I duplicated the N-Gage image in Finder and changed the name to NOK7710.tiff before venturing to dupicate the plist file and opening it using Text Editor.

When pairing my phone the only Bluetooth option visible is using my phone as a modem.

What occured to me is that I might have screwed up the plist file by opening it with an application not mentioned in this thread. Any file properties or permissions that might have been corrupted by doing so? One indication that something is not wrong is that the Nokia 6630 I have previously synced now has a red exclamation mark in iSync, stating that there is no valid script for this phone.

So... What should I do? I tried to sva the file again, using the terminal and I tried both Your code and the code from the original post with no success. Also, how can I verify what string to use for the Nokia 7710 to be correctly identified? Could the string to use differ between different language versions or firmware revisions of the phone? Has anything changed since these posts were done? I'm running 10.4.6 on a Power Mac G4 MDD.

Thanks,

Mårten

Nokia 9300i with WLAN support needs to be updated in PC-Suite (for example) to work with mac os x. PC-Suite installs "SMSsyncSupport" software to phone. After that you can use it with isync (isync installs own software by smssyncsupport).

Modify isync as told earlier. But name 9300 as 9300i on every line that contain 9300.

Got it to work but actually it worked without renaming the device to 9300i as you mentioned. The exact original modifcations listed in this thread worked. Tried first with the modified version - no go. Weird :)

So this worked for me:

1. Connect the 9300i to a PC and PC Suite and install the SMSsupport-thingy
2. Modify your iSync according to the ORIGINAL 9300 instructions listed in the beginning fo this thread
3. ...and we are in! :)

Successful Sync between 9300 and Mac 10.4
Authored by: GeersTiger on Mar 16, '06 04:46:29AM

Finally, after much unsuccesful hacking and working through PCs, I managed to conclude on a simple way to sync my Nokia 9300 with the Mac! It is a commercial product, developed by a Berlin-based company with profound experience in Mac-Bluetooth-communication, Nova Media MDS GmbH:
http://www.novamedia.de/sync/index.html
It is a plug-in to iSync, called 'nova media phone plugins for iSync© 01550' and costs just under €10 excl. VAT.

It installs automatically off a disk image.dmg and prompts you to upload the recipient agent into the 9300. After that, sync'ing is a jewel of simplicity! It syncs - the selected sub sections of- Mac's Address Book and iCal calendar, swiftly and intelligently. With an easy conversion step it should also work from/to Entourage / Outlook

Finally my 9300 isn't an isolated data bank any more!

Curious to hear other Mac/9300 users' experiences..
Good luck!
Gerard

Duplicate the folder "Nokia-9300i.phoneplugin" and rename it as "Nokia-9300.phoneplugin"

Open the new folder "Nokia-9300.phoneplugin"

Open folder "Contents"

Open file "info.plist" with TextEdit.app, find ALL "9300i" and replace them with "9300", Save

Open folder "Resources"

Rename the "com.nokia.9300i.tiff" as "com.nokia.9300.tiff"

Open file "MetaClasses.plist" with TextEdit.app, find ALL "9300i" and replace them with "9300", Save

10.4: Add Nokia 9300 iSync support
Authored by: avsink on Jan 07, '07 12:57:04PM

Hi
I have tried this hack but unfortunately no luck. Let me explain what I did:

1- I changed NOKNGAGE.TIFF TO NOK9300.TIFF
2- I ADDED THE "CODE" TO THE META FILE BY USING TEXTEDIT.
3- I ran the Setup BlueTooth Device. However, at the final step iSync option didn't appear so that I couldn't choose it...
Do you have any idea where the problem is...?

Thanx

Avsin

The Nokia forums speak of another method similar to this one. I've modified the necessary files - you need only follow a few steps:

1/ Download This .zip file (For the paranoid, you can simple unzip it and look at its contents in your text editor. It consists only of configuration text files and some icons)

2/ Copy this by selecting the following maroon text and then pressing Command-C :

/Applications/iSync.app/Contents/PlugIns/ApplePhoneConduit.syncdevice/Contents/PlugIns

3/ Open the finder. Press Command-Shift 'G' (that is 'Go to Folder' on the Go menu bar item.) Paste what you copied in step 1 into the dialog box.

4/ Drag and drop the downloadeded .zip file (from step 1) into the Folder that is opened in step 3.

5/ Unzip the .zip archive by double clicking on it. You should then have a folder named 'Nokia-9300.phoneplugin'. You should then put the original archive into the trash or somewhere else for backup as you won't need it anymore

Now you will be able to add the Nokia 9300 like any other bluetooth device. It would be perhaps wise to remove any bluetooth pairings which might cause conflict. Also, you will have to select the option 'always allow connection' on the Nokia for the Mac to connect without intervention from your part. (see on the phone: Settings > Connections > Bluetooth).

Note that this solution is far superior than the one proposed earlier, as it syncs directly using the MLsync. It won't need the small apple application 'iSync Config' either. Another plus, is that you have a little icon on the phone telling you when it is synchronizing. Not to mention that it won't lock the phone up like the iSync Config Application does.

Also I included a nice icon for iSync.

Hope it is useful for you, it works perfect here! If more assistance needed, hope to help.

Enjoy :)
