Site schedule next week and Tiger's release... Site News

Due to travel plans this week, macosxhints' updates between April 25th and 29th will be somewhat intermittent.

Tiger tips coming at 6:01pm Pacific time tonight!
Friday April 29th: 6 new hints
Tuesday April 26th: 7 new hints

I will have (at best) an occasional net connection for the whole week, so getting hints posted will be a bit of a random affair. I'll definitely be running some stuff, but I can't really commit that there will be a daily update, nor that said update will occur at any given time on any given day. The best bet is probably to check the RSS feed a few times a day with your favorite RSS reader to see when the new stuff pops up. So if it seems slow around here next week ... well, it's because it probably is!

There will be, however, at least a few Tiger hints that will be posted at 6:01pm Pacific time on Friday the 29th. I have a few in the queue that have been sumbitted by readers, and there are some things I've stumbled over myself, so I'll make sure those go up as soon as Tiger is officially shipping in my time zone.

Tiger only hintFinally, I've decided on a modified system for the future Tiger-only tips. I've already created a new category for System-related Tiger tips (the System104 category). That's great for the system stuff, but there are also going to be application tips, Unix tips, networking tips, etc., that will probably be Tiger-only. To handle those, I'll be using the small Tiger X logo you see at left. This will help graphically identify those tips that are only for Tiger yet not System related. When searching, the hints search engine will also be able to find these posts: just run a search for tigerx, as that's (part of) the name of that small image file. It's highly unlikely that word will appear in a 'normal' post, so the results will be all the Tiger-only tips. I'll try to put together a saved search link when I get back next week to make it really simple for everyone.

Having had the chance to use Tiger for a while now, I'm quite happy with it (though there are always things one will want that aren't there!). I plan on publishing an in-depth review sometime in the first couple weeks of May, schedule permitting ("fat chance in heck of that ever getting done," you all say...). It really is a worthy follow-up to 10.3.

Have a great week everyone!

Thanks for the heads up Rob. I think I'll be able to survive for a couple of days. Gives me a chance to figure out some cool things on my own. I can't wait for the flood though. I hope you're up to it. :)

thanks for being so brilliiantly present each day,

connecting us to our best cooperation and learning from each other.

You and this community have helped me a lot to adjust my Mac and my taste of OS to get a system that reflects the way I tic.

I hope you find time to go surfing or see dolphins or whales.

Good travelings

Thomas_U

I know the logo is the Apple official one - but it's a little too similar to Panther for at-a-glance navigation, in my opinion.

A tiny tiny little quibble.

Well, given that the logo will only appear in Tiger tips ... there shouldn't be too much area for confusion. I may add a text overlay saying "Tiger Only," though.

Shame on Apple for not informing you of the launch date. Do they personally inform anyone?

thx

Well, I think Tiger is crap, only because it made Mail.app a non-functioning waste of space and obliterated all my past e-mails.

I always thought that would be an amusing trick to play on people running pre-release beta versions of operating systems...

Wow, I think Mail.app 2 is one of the best IMAP clients I've used on any system. Much faster than Mail.app 1 which being more feature-rich.

Are you serious?

Are you really admiting to us that you did not back up your mail library & prefs? And since it hasn't been fully released yet, then you're using a pre-release dev version yes? This prompts one to ask how you could get upset when you didn't backup and knowingly were using a pre-release. I do feel bad for your mail though. That sucks man.
