Safari, 10.3.9, and third-party add-ons... Web Browsers
A number of people have written in either asking for help with a 10.3.9 Safari crash, or with hints to solve such crashes. So I thought I'd just write one hint with the explanation of the cause and the easy fix.

Basically, if Safari is crashing for you in 10.3.9 (or after any future system update), and you've eliminated the usual suspects such as a bad preferences file, it's likely caused by an "input manager" add-on that you have installed. For instance, both AcidSearch and Saft use the Input Manager interface -- and their pre-10.3.9 versions will cause Safari to crash.

To fix the crashes, first find out what you might have installed. You can find the Input Managers in a number of locations:
  • At both the top-level and in your user's folder, check the Library: InputManagers folder
  • The top-level Library: Application Support: SIMBL folder
Once you find out what's installed, check those websites for new versions of the plug-ins (both AcidSearch and Saft have already been updated for 10.3.9). If you can't find a new version of the plug-in, delete the entries in the above folders, then re-launch Safari.

Safari, 10.3.9, and third-party add-ons...

By the way, I just read on Dave Hyatt's blog (he's the lead Safari developer) that Safari 1.3 (that comes with OS X 10.3.9) has the same WebKit engine that will come with Safari 2.0 (in Tiger):

This means that if something works with Safari 1.3, it is quite likely it will work with the version we will get with Tiger.

The new AcidSearch and Sogudi work with Tigger. Or so I've heard. ;)

Have you tried clearing your cache and cookies?

I've got the exact same problem. I've cleared the cache and all that jazz, but nothing has helped.

I had this problem with PithHelmet. Basically you have to manually remove any of the components that it installs and Safari starts working again. I did another install to figure out what it was trying to install, then I searched for the components and trashed them.

Also found that Nicholas Riley's ICeCoffEE 1.4 causes [cmd]-click to open links in a new window or tab to stop working in Safari 1.3. He's likely coming out with a fix today but until then you need to go into APE manager and either turn off that functionality or put Safari in the exclusion list.

iGetter uses the InputManager and also has problems with Safari 1.3, as installed in 10.3.9. If you turn off the contextual menu option in iGetter, it'll still handle downloads. The developers promise a fix soon.

Go to Apple's software downloads page and re-install the 02-2005 Security update...It'll fix Java in 10.3.9!

iGetter is crap and royally unstable!

Speed Download 3 blows it away in terms of functionality, speed, features, and works flawless with Mac OS X 10.3.9 and even Tiger! The developer even provides deep discounts to an already very low priced app!

The one that caused problems for me was WebDevAdditions. It would crash whenever I closed a window using command-w. It would appear that the developer has updated it to fix this problem. I haven't tested the new one, though.

Heh, the new one crashes if you try to show the CSS Stylesheets without a site loaded in the window. I tried to find the guy's email address but his website didn't make it immediately apparent so I said "screw it". If you know it, go ahead and report it. I don't particularly care.

New PithHelmet 2.3 plays nice w/ Safari 1.3
Authored by: Norm Nager on Apr 18, '05 04:19:35PM

PithHelmet 2.3, which was released on April 16, plays nice with Safari 1.3. From the developer's blog, it appears that he'll have another version after Tiger is released to work with OS 10.4.

SafariKeywords 0.7 incompatible

SafariKeywords 0.7 is also incompatible with Mac OS X 10.3.9. Until an update is available, deinstall SK as explained on the website: http://safarikeywords.sourceforge.net/#Deinstallation

Argh. I had AcidSearch installed, and Safari crashed. Being a little hasty, I reinstalled Safari with the download from Apple - which I now realise is 1.2. I don't suppose there is any way to get Safari 1.3 as a separate installer?
