Get free iTunes songs for an iPod System
Apple has apparently included a surprise in their latest iTunes updates. Whenever a fresh iPod is inserted into the computer, you are asked to register it and name it. Even if you choose not to register, though, the iTMS opens up to a page that offers a free download of 16 songs!

Now, the hidden, bonus part is this. Even if your iPod isn't new, you can still get this song collection by simply using the iPod Updater (which can be downloaded through the Apple web site [2005-03-23 updater] or Software Update) to restore your iPod. This wipes your iPod's settings, and when you plug in next, the iTunes free music page pops up. (This is how I discovered it.)

Unfortunately, these aren't "16 songs of your choice." The current incarnation of this is 16 "Pop" sounds by Atlantic Records. I assume that because it refers to "Atlantic/Lava Edition," there may be more of these free albums.

Don't reset your iPod just to get this free download! All you need to do is a google search for "iTunes New Music Sampler" for the latest version (released every few months.) The link for this particular sampler is: http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?playlistId=39887273

Enjoy!

You have to select the "buy the album" button. You can't select individual songs.

Whoa! You're right! You *can* get the whole album!

OK, I'm an idiot. I *was* clicking on the individual songs. Downloading the whole album (by clicking on "Get Album") right now. Thanks!

Nope. These are different tunes. Granted, most of them are garbage, but they are free.

Yup, there are more versions.

I have the "iTunes New Music Sampler (Universal Motown Edition)" version.

BUT... for those, like me, who have an iPod but don't use the iTunes store, you'll have to sign up for the iTunes store. That includes giving them a credit card number.

BAD APPLE! It may seem like good business practice to them, but with the large number of customer DBs that have been cracked recently --and that we've actually heard about-- I'm not about to leave my credit card number in some database unless I absolutely can't live without that service. It's illustrative of the scale of risk that the theft of over 300,000 (e.g. you probably know someone who got hit) from Lexis Nexis is one of the smaller intances.

Actually you can signup for iTMS with a Paypal account now, and you don't have to leave your cc info in your paypal account making it a fairly safe alternative.

You don't even NEED a payment option in an iTunes account.

I don't have one, and only use gift certificates, cards, Pepsi caps, etc.

Credit card terms limit your legal liability if your information is lost or stolen

In response to the poster who was concerned about registering at the iTunes store for fear the Apple database would be hacked and his credit card information would be stolen:

1) People who worry about this kind of thing usually don't use credit cards to buy anything on the internet.

2) Usually, outside of firewall issues, this data is usually seriously encrypted. And you can bet that at every matior e-tailer efforts have been massively upgraded recently to make sure that their sites are secure.

3) The most you can lose from this kind of theft is $50 and in this kind of theft apple may have legal liability for the loss, I am not a lawyer though ihave played one on the stage.

4) There is no number 4.

5) You may have noticed that credit card companies have been asking more security questions during transactions lately, both online and at the register. This trend is likely to increase and soon.

6)As two other posters have pointed out in replies to sub-posts that I would like to bring up to the higher level - you do NOT need a credit card to open up and iTunes account. In fact, a paypal account will do. And other alternatives including redeeming Pepsi caps may do for a start.

For awhile by the way, Apple was in fact encouraging users to SWITCH from credit cards to Paypal and was giving away 5 free songs to do so. I think that deal is over, but you might want to check or watch for it to come back.

7) Intense loyalty to the, oh, Rest in Peace John Paul II.

8) No matter how cool something like iTunes is - there is always someone - especially those working at Microsoft, oops, a few managers at Microsoft, most of the Staff uses iPods and iTunes - willing to find some reason pee on it. Even if they use it. I imagine someone looked at fire for the first time and said "Yeah, but it probably won't be any good at getting any women."

This is not to say that caution in Internet transactions is unneeded, but Apple is a fairly good bet.

That kind of post does make you wonder if bringing in a post like that is worth extra points in a Microsoft Performance Review nowdays. LOL.
