To omit photos with a certain keyword from your Library or from an album in iPhoto 5, simply Option-click the keyword. It will then turn red instead of blue, and any photos with that keyword will be omitted. This can be very handy if you have a lot of photos with a keyword that you don't care to look at right then and there.

Omit photos with a given keyword in iPhoto 5
I've tried this under the photo and in the keyword list. I can't seem to get it to work. Could you be more specific. My library has black and grey keywords. I don't see the blue keywords you mentioned.

I will try to be more specific : in the keyword palette, at the left, if you click on a keyword box, you will make it blue and only the photos with this keyword will show up....

When you click the key icon on the bottom left of the iPhoto main window, you will get a list of keywords in grey. If you click a grey keyword, it will turn blue and only show photos with that keyword. If you option-click a _grey_ keyword, it will turn red and omit photos with that keyword.

Nice! I had not noticed that before. I wish there were a way to permanently not display certain photos in the main library. Perhaps Apple could add a "do not display" or "hide this photo" keyword/flag that could cause certain photos to only appear in selected albums (or not at all).

Just create a smart album that excludes it.
Omit photos with a given keyword in iPhoto 5
In iTunes I use a SmartPlaylist to do something similar that could be applied to iPhoto. I never use iTunes default Library list as my main resource anymore. Since I've added radio stations to my library that won't allow you to change the genre, I've got all sorts of genres I don't want cluttering up the place. So I created a Library SmartPlaylist that grabs every song whose kind does not contain "stream" (since radio stations are streams). Then my SmartPlaylist library only has my stuff and my genres. I never even look at the iTunes default Library list anymore; my Library SmartPlaylist is what I consider my library. You could do the same thing with iPhoto and exclude the photos you don't want considered as part of your library.

Ok. The smart album solution works well. I did not consider this before. I made a keyword "Hide". I then made a smart album that includes all photos except those with the keyword "Hide". I made a second album that includes only those photos with the keyword "Hide". Thanks...
Omit photos with a given keyword in iPhoto 5
how about storing it in a different folder, it will be saved, and not show up in your iphoto library... I do this with my desktop pictures.
iPhoto should not show the full Library when launched
Using a smart folder works, but it's silly that iPhoto doesn't remember which album was being viewed the last time the application was closed. You may have certain pictures you don't want to show to everybody, and as soon as you launch iPhoto, all your pictures are shown, because iPhoto always shows the whole Library at startup. |
