A possible fix for iPhoto 05 and .Mac page uploads Apps
Since updating to iLife 05, I have not been able to upload to my .Mac Homepage. iPhoto is unable to download its new themes, so the Themes dialog fails to open properly, text is scrambled, selected photos do not show, and buttons are grayed out so you cannot go any further. There is a discussion about this on the Apple Discussions site. In this discussion is a solution that worked for me: running iPhoto as a new user.

After creating a new user and logging in as the new user, run iPhoto, go to "Share/Homepage" or hit the Homepage icon, and the new themes will download. You do not have to go on to publish, but iPhoto will be fixed. Go back to your original user account, and all will be well.

[robg adds: In browsing the linked discussion, there are a number of people reporting this problem, and a number of suggested solutions. If you're having trouble posting iPhotos to your .Mac homepage, it's worth a read (and there are a couple of other linked discussions from that one which may have further ideas). I don't use iPhoto to publish to .Mac, so I can't verify the problem or the solution.]

A possible fix for iPhoto 05 and .Mac page uploads

I had problems for ages with iphoto 4/5. It ended up being a webdav problem and ISP. It did however (as if by magic) sort itself out so still none the wiser.

good luck

A possible fix for iPhoto 05 and .Mac page uploads

I ran into this problem a couple of days ago, and browsed the Apple discussion for a fix. (I'm using 10.3.8 and iPhoto 5.0.1.) I tried two things, and the problem (downloading Themes forever) went away. Unfortunately, I did them both at once, so I'm not sure which one worked, but from the discussion I'm doubtful that it was the prefs.

The second fix was to go to System Preferences->International->Languages and uncheck everything but English (I had about a dozen checked; use the Edit button to change your list).

IIRC, a logout or restart is required.

When I went back to iPhoto to upload pix, at first I thought I had the same old problem. But this time the Theme-downloading terminated after a short wait, and all was hunky-dory.

There's no good reason why this should work, of course, except the catchall reason of some obscure bug.

Could Norton Auto-Protect be the problem?

Could Norton Auto-Protect be the problem? According to the Apple Knowledgebase it blocks the export of Quicktime movies and DVDs from iPhoto 5:

Not for me as I don't even own Norton. Neither is it a firewall problem as it persisted with the firewall turned off. I believe it was something to do with iPhoto 04 being left behind in my user account which blocked the downloading of the new templates. A new user meant the templates could download without the blockage.

I had this problem with iPhoto 4/5 too... nothing worked, not deleting the prefs files, re-installing, or anything (and I don't have Norton auto-protect, as one these posts suggests).

The problem was fixed by creating a new user, and attempting to upload pictures with iPhoto under the new user - that seemed to download the iPhoto themes and everything was fine again.

Tried creating a new user, and sure enough the new user could publish a homepage, but my real account still coudn't.

However, I'm English & therefore use 'British English'. Adding 'English' at the No.1 slot in languages fixed the problem for me.

As you Americans say, go figure…
