On the upcoming release of OS X 10.4 [Tiger] Site News
As everyone is probably aware, the release of OS X 10.4 (Tiger) is rapidly approaching -- some time between now and June 30th. The last time we had a major release, yours truly didn't plan to0 well, and I ended up hand-coding all the 10.3 only hints -- both in the subject of each hint, and in that linked meta-hint.

Given how much the site has grown since that time, I'm not taking the same approach with 10.4. As of today, I've added a new topic specifically for OS X 10.4. If you are submitting a hint that's specific to 10.4, please use this new category for your submission. I'll then know to test on 10.4, and other readers can easily run a search for "10.4 only" hints. Depending on which theme you use here, the topic icon will look like one of the following:
The leftmost icon is for the Classic theme, the center one is in both the Color_lines and Color_effects themes, and the rightmost is for Gray_lines. So when you see these icons, you know you're looking at a 10.4-only hint.

Note that this is not a perfect solution -- there will be some applications (both Apple-supplied and third-party) that require 10.4 in order to work. If you're submitting such a hint, please note the requirement in the body, as I'll continue to classify these tips in the Applications group.

Tiger will bring some exciting new features to OS X users, and if it's anything at all like Panther (10.3), a flood of new hints to the site. As with 10.3, I will not publish any Tiger-specific hints until the release is publicly available. But whatever that date turns out to be, I'll be here to publish my findings, along with the reader submissions.

Will you also indicate if the hint works for 10.3 at least for a while. i do not know what you did before with 10.2-10.3 becuase i only started reading the site long after 10.3.

Also, BTW, i have a good poll topic: do you plan to switch to tiger and then an updated "whats your favorite new feature" (i think you did onw when Tiger was first announced.

Just to clarify, this category will *only* be used for hints that are specific to OS X 10.4. If something works in 10.3 and 10.4, it will go into the general System category. So if you see something with the special 10.4 indicator, you know it won't work in anything earlier.

And yea, I plan on having a couple of polls on Tiger switching and features...

System 10.4? Someeeeebody's an old school Mac user.

I really suggest using the word Tiger, or Os X 10.4, system 10.4 reaks of old macs from the days when it stunk up the industry. And seeing that most of the users on the site are newbs getting great insight (thats what brought me here 3 years ago :), i think it looks bad.

just my $.02

I think you might be misreading the icon. The "System" part is the general category for OS hints now. So "System 10.4" in the icon isn't supposed to be like "System 8" or "System 9". Instead, it means a "System" hint in the OS 10.4 subcategory. OTOH, that one can read it like "System 8" also seems kinda old-school cool to me. YMMV.

I remember well what a revolution System 6 was in its day, and the enthusiasm Mac users had for System 7 upon its release, then for System 8, and then for 9 as well. I never could care less what the industry thought about Macs - all I knew was that it worked for me, with more elegance than anything M$ was trying to foist on me. So speak for yourself, but some of us old school 512K Fat Mac users think a reference to System 10.4, while anachronistic, is just fine.

An Apple operating system hasn't been called "System ___" since before 8.0. Shouldn't these icons reflect that?

"system" icon and 10.4

I believe "system" is a category here. All that has been changed is a "10.4" added to the icons to denote 10.4.

"system" icon and 10.4
Authored by: robg on Mar 22, '05 11:17:44PM

Exactly -- there has been a category here called "System" since day one. It's not intended to be the name of the OS; it's a grouping of hints related specifically to the operating system. Since "Operating System" is too long, and "OS" is too short and arcane, I settled on "System" over five years ago.

The *only* change I made today was to add a new category, indicated by adding the little "10.4" marker to the existing category icon.

At some point in the future I may consider changing this, but really, it's not very high on my priority list :).

Yeah, "System" is confusing to visitors, since it is in no way referred to "System 10.4" by Apple (or, to my knowledge, the Mac community on the whole)... OSX 10.4 is probably the easiest (OSX 10.1, 10.2, 10.3, 10.4) and most accurate! Easier to identify visually, too - in a smaller space.

Geez, it's said "System" for over five years, and nobody makes one comment ... and I add a "10.4" at the end, and it's the end of the world?

Since the entire site is about OS X, technically every hint should be placed in an "OS X" category. I created "System" to specify those hints which are intrinsic to the system itself.

If these icons are so upsetting to folks, someone is more than welcome to take a shot at some new ones -- I lack both the time and the talent to do so. Just keep in mind that there are 16 topics in three unique themes, so that's 48 icons total...

OK so this is completely off topic, but I did'nt know where to post it so here it goes (feel completely free to remove it if necessary):

I love the Gray Lines theme, it's very cool and sleek, but I find the white background very distracting. In the Classic Theme the darker blue background focuses your view on the hints which makes it the default theme for me. Would you consider applying a darker background to the grey lines theme?

Only to stay on topic I will add that system 10.4 is okay by me... I don't know what all the fuzz is about...

My only doubt is that having only one mac at home (which I supose is the situation for most of the people) I wouldn't really know if a hint is System or System 10.4 related (unless it is something really obvious like spotlight).

So maybe the best way to go is to keep just one system category and award the "10.4 only" status after some user has tried it on an earlier version and proved it doesn't work. Maybe an automatically generated poll on each hint would do the trick...

Greetings

gaita

The idea is that the 10.4 category will only be applied to those hints that are clearly 10.4-only -- spotlight, automator, etc. If something might work on 10.3, I'll test it on both -- I'm going to keep a 10.3 box here just for that purpose for a bit.

As for a darker background, I could probably try that and see how it looks; I'll see if I can get to that next week...

I completely agree about the graylines theme... it would be nice to have a darker gray background, rather than the white.

Perhaps if you moved the "10.4" in front of the "system" (possibly separating them with a colon) people might parse it a bit better and not freak out so much. It should be a fairly quick change too...

Look at the name of the main OS folder: "System". I don't think system really confuses anyone.

This site is for hints on Mac OS X. Having a catergory as 'Mac OS X' really doesn't make much sense, since every single hint on this site refers to it. I think 'System' is the more logical choice.

Please remember to mention if it's an OS 10.3 or 10.4 hint in the subject line (or somewhere) of RSS feeds. I only actually come to the site if there is a hint I want details on or to comment, but otherwise rely on my aggregator to bring me the hints.

I will try, but the point of having the 10.4-specific category is to make sure that, if I forget to mention it, visitors will be able still tell that it's 10.4 only, and/or find those hints with an easy search.

Generally speaking, 10.4-only tips will be quite obvious, as they'll talk about Spotlight, Automator, CoreVideo, and other 10.4-only technologies.

I think that people who can't handle "System" and "10.4" juxtaposed should switch back to ProDOS. ;)
