An easy way to access multiple iPhoto5 libraries Apps
I stumbled across this in the help file, but couldn't find a reference to it anywhere on OS X hints.

If you launch iPhoto 5 and hold the Option key, iPhoto will ask you which library you would like to open. iPhoto remembers this preference until the next time you change it by holding the option key on launch. How easy is that?

[robg adds: We've run multiple hints on setting the iPhoto library location; it looks like they finally made it much, much easier in iPhoto 5 ... and yes, it's in help, but I hadn't noticed it there, so I figured it was worth publishing this one. But if it turns out to be a dupe, I'm sure someone will comment about it!]

that is pretty cool but, easier way for me anyways, if you don't mind more software. the free iPhoto Buddy is excellent, gives you a nice list of all of your albums and their locations. I took iPhoto off the dock a long time ago and just use iPhoto buddy whenever I want to launch it. The developer is working on a version that is more compatible with the new iPhoto so make sure you read the site for more info. It still works fine for me though.

I keep my libraries in disk images - all of which are volumes named "Pictures" - and iPhoto 5 thinks its library is in /Volumes/Pictures - then I just select/open the appropriate disk image before i open up iPhoto et. Voila - i'm all set.

This further lets me do things like password protect some albums vs. others, etc...

I tried making disc images of libraries, but even when named 'Pictures' they don't auto-open the way they do when an actual dvd is inserted.

Plus, iPhoto 5 says it needs to convert the thumbnails, but then closes down saying it needs another 78Mb. Any suggestions?

Just guessing, maybe you need to use sparse disk images (i.e. selfexpanding ones).

I guess that's also a good way to overcome the permissions issues you experience when multiple users want to use one library, right?

After messing with the permissions my wife and I can now use iPhoto and have one central place to put our pictures.

I was hoping to be able to do that... would you mind providing details? I have a huge iPhoto library, and my wife wants to start using iPhoto too... but I don't necessarily want her littering my iPhoto library with her photos. I'd rather we both had acces to both libraries (one in her account and one in mine) and could use this hint to pick the library upon startup. Is that what you're doing, by chance?
