Send notifcations to groups with iCal and Address Book Apps
Here's a related-but unique addendum to the Send iCal alarms to other people's email addresses hint. I thought if you could do that, you can do the same thing with your Address Book groups. Sure enough, it works like a charm.

In your Adress Book entry, add a new email entry, give it some relevant name such as "Fellow mac nuts," and then in the email address field, enter the name of an existing group from your Address Book. Now that label and email address will show up in the iCal email alarm drop-down box.

[robg adds: This does indeed work as described. If your group name has spaces in it, you don't even need to do anything special -- just type the name of the group, complete with spaces.]

Bless you -- this is one very useful hint. I tested it; works great for me and will save me having to maintain a couple of free web email accounts that I used just to send email reminders from iCal out to all family members. Thanks so much!

If only Apple would allow us to enter group names from the AddressBook into the iCal reminder field... This way we could avoid the addition of "noise" to the AddressBook...

dang, this just won't work on my home mac, and I can't see why ... i'm running the same version of OSX [the latest Panther], and the same versions of iCal and Address Book, as my machine at work. On the work Mac, I followed directions in this tip and all worked as described. At home, iCal refuses to give me any email address except the single one that is marked as "my" address. Any ideas?

I think I cracked the secret. Looks like it's working. Here's what I had to do:

As in the tip linked to this tip [top of page], I had to make one massive address "card" that has any and all emails I might like to use in iCal, including the email addresses that are really just group names. I had to make this "my card". If I didn't do all these things, iCal would not offer me the groups as email options in a new event.
