Send iCal alarms to other people's email addresses Apps
In iCal, when you set an alarm for an event, you can tell iCal to send you an email reminder when the alarm goes off. But you can't send notifications to email addresses that aren't yours, for some reason beknownst only to Apple.

A workaround is to add other people's email addresses to your entry in Address Book, with a custom label set to their name. Now that label and email address will show up in the iCal email alarm drop-down box, and you can remind other people of things, instead of just yourself.

[robg adds: This works really well; just open Address Book, edit your card, and add a new entry in the email address section. Click on the automatically-chosen label ("work" or "home," for instance), and select "Custom..." from the pop-up menu. Enter the desired recipient's name, and then put their email address into the email side of the entry. When you return to iCal, you can now choose this name/email address in the alarm menu's email pop-up. Very nice -- hopefully Apple will eventually allow this behavior without the hoop jumping...]

However, this seems to go against all ways of keeping you data. Ie.. I have bluetooth and sync my phone's callendar, adressbook, etc. This would give me alot of extra data.

There must be a better (applescript) way!

applescript seems like overkill (to me). Just put the alarm in with your own email address, quit iCal, then edit the .ics file in ~/Library/Calendars/, changing the email address in the event's ATTENDEE line to the right one. No tainting your own record with someone else's data that way ...

Ah, but then you're doing the work of finding and editing that .ics file, instead of just using iCal and the GUI, which is the point of having iCal, seems to me. If I'm gonna open the .ics file, I might as well just send a darn email instead.

But if the .ics file can be that easily manipulated, perhaps there's a way to combine your suggestion with an Applescript or small application that brings us something closer to the [intended] convenience afforded by iCal....

You know what would be really nice? If I could make iCal send an email WITHOUT opening up my email application. I use Eudora and this causes Eudora to open and download all my emails - not ideal if I'm on the road.

I suppose if you do not send these that often, you could get iCal to send it to your email.
and use mail rules to deal with it.
ie.

if subject contains ALARM - youreventsubjecthere
then

forward or redirect to thisperson@his.com

That would be fine if you only send ical alarms to one person, in which case having one more e-mail address in your own listing isn't really a problem.

actually you can drag and drop .ics onto Textwrangler to do your edit.

also to Note.

The last event you entered is always at the bottom of the file. which would make a script much easier to do. by being able to count the lines up from the bottom of the file END:VCALENDAR and editing your ATENDEE line

BEGIN:VEVENT
DTSTART;TZID=Europe/London:20050302T030000
SUMMARY:next1
UID:57274C9C-8D1A-11D9-81E3-000D93316118
SEQUENCE:1
DTSTAMP:20050305T020032Z
DURATION:PT1H
BEGIN:VALARM
ACTION:EMAIL
SUMMARY:Alarm notification
TRIGGER:-PT1M
ATTENDEE:mailto:memate@markG5
DESCRIPTION:This is an event reminder
END:VALARM
END:VEVENT
END:VCALENDAR

You would also have to make sure iCal is quit before the edit takes place. I tested the edit and it works.

If you then open iCal and toggle the email or play with the event it will reset. just selecting the event did not change it back

I also created an event without an alarm, close ical and opened the file in textwrangler. Inserted

BEGIN:VALARM
ACTION:EMAIL
SUMMARY:Alarm notification
TRIGGER:-PT1M
ATTENDEE:mailto:memate@markG5
DESCRIPTION:This is an event reminder
END:VALARM

between

DURATION:PT1H
and
END:VEVENT
saved the file and then opened iCal. the alarm was now there.

forgot to add. The script could have a dialog to enter the address to be inserted.

you could also use iCal to run it. by having two alarms.

one to run the script, which quits iCal in what ever the before time would be now, and do the edit ( it could even bring iCal back up)

the other is you email alarm. that will get edited.

Hmmm

Why don't you just tell Eudora to not automatically check your e-mail (ie, uncheck "Check mail every x minutes"). You can then manually check it when you wish.

clever idea. but, that only works if you set up the rule beforehand. kinda inconvienient to have to make rules for every event you set up in iCal.

…unless you are doing something even more clever with the rules. maybe you could share how you set up the rule.

I've created an applescript which mails a reminder to all attendees of an event. You can find it here: http://redant.nl/e.vrolijk/blog/article/remind-all-attendees-in-ical

Has anyone managed to get the "remindAllAttendees" Applescript working? It appears to be saved as a classic application. I would fix it myself - but it is uneditable.
