Restore the 1152x864 resolution in 10.3 System
Some people (including me) have lost the ability to select a resolution of 1152x864 in certain circumstances. This seems to have disappeared during various generations of Panther updates. There is also some speculation on the web about Iiyama monitors not reporting all the available resolutions.

On one of my systems that has had Panther installed from scratch, 1152x864 is not an optional resolution, and it does have an Iiyama monitor connected. On a 19" monitor, this size is a good compromise between text size and desktop space. One solution is to use a shareware app to add to available resolutions -- there are several out there -- but quite honestly, I just wanted to add it and forget it.

After extensive testing, the only thing that is needed to get 1152x864 back is to add one line to a file named IOGraphicsProperties.plist. This file is located in /System -> Library -> Frameworks -> IOKit.framework -> Version -> A -> Resources/.

Naturally, you have to be logged in as root to get at this file. All the usual stuff applies -- make a copy of the file, save it safely somewhere, and edit the original in TextEdit). Near the top of the file, look for the line that reads:
<key>gtf-resolutions</key>
Below this line is a list of resolutions. Add the following line after the one with 1024 in it:
<integer>1152</integer>
I have found that it is not necessary to change any of the resolution lists that follow this array. Save the file, quit the editor, and reboot. You should now have 1152x864 as an option in Display preferences. Presumably the aspect ratio is calculated from the 1152, as it was not necessary to change anything else.

[robg adds: Instead of logging in as root, it's much safer (and a bit easier) to edit this file using sudo in the Terminal and terminal-based editor such as pico or vi. Alternatively, I would recommend copying the file in the Finder as your normal admin user, saving a backup of that copy, editing the first copy, and then placing the edited version back into its original folder. You won't be able to just drag and drop it, but if you hold down Option to copy the file, the system will then prompt you to replace the existing file, and then ask for your admin password. Either option is a better solution than logging in as root...]

I have Iiyama monitors at work - Os9 If I remember right we had to change the standard VGA cables to more expensive ones to get them to show all the available resolutions . I think it was to do with the frequency of the cables.

I already found this hack some time ago. I'm currently running my display at 1472x1104 pixels at 100 Hz.

You can add any value you want, though it's preferable to take multiples of 4, in order to have get a proper 4x3 geometry. You also can add values to the refresh rates list in order to obtain a finer graduation of available rates.

I have made plist files containing lots of resolutions at multiples of 32 with all the refresh rates up to 170 Mhz.

Also note that this file is set back at nealry every minor 10.3 update, so you have to restore it after updating…

Restore the 1152x864 resolution in 10.3

It is unlikely that cable quality would affect which resolutions the Mac thinks the monitor can handle.

The device ID signalling is done at a very low frequency, compared to the video itself, on a dedicated set of wires. If your monitor is showing up with the correct model name in the Display menu, the signalling is working fine.

On the other hand, if you see something like "Generic", "Unknown", or so on, do a "Detect Displays" and see if it turns up. If it still doesn't, then try a newer cable--your old one might be missing the DDI signalling wires, or they might be broken.

This assumes you're using a new-ish (10 year old or less) Plug'n'Play VGA monitor. An old Mac-style monitor with a Mac-VGA cable adapter isn't going to do VGA-type signalling. Macs used a different method for identifying monitors back then.

I'm especially interested in adding additional display resolution options to my 17" powerbook g4. I would like to add 1920x1200, just to see how it looks. I know that the physical pixels are not really flexible, but I still would like to see that as an option if it were possible.

Would I be able to add this resolution in the same fashion so that I could try 1920x1200 resolution on my powerbook, or does this hack just unlock something that is already part of the system in another place.

Either way, I know that Apple offers support for that screen resolution (and aspect ratio) based on the 23" cinema display

While I don't think this hack alone will enable you to "see" your PowerBook running 1920x1200, combining it with the kewl screensharing VNC client in ARD 2.1 (and possibly other VNC servers, but I'm not to familiar with those) it might be possible.

I use ARD on my iBook to connect to Macs running much higher resolutions than my meager 1024 x 768. I've dreamed of tricking my iBook into thinking it was running a higher resolution somehow (possibly through the external video port?) and then connecting to itself...

But I really have no idea how to make this work. Still, it would be a useful feature - another kind of "virtual desktop" which is so sorely lacking natively in OS X.

What about refresh rate?

I now have 1152 x 864 showing up in my display preferences but the refresh rate is 60 Hz and I can't change it, the other options are disabled. My monitor will display 1152 x 864 at 75 Hz. Any ideas?
