macosxhints.com reaches a minor milestone... Site News
Over the weekend, we registered our 50,000th free account. Given that the only real reasons for registering are to (a) post comments, (b) have a hint published as a non-anonymous user, and (c) change the themes (yea, there are four to choose from), that's not bad for just over four years of existence. Thanks to everyone for helping make this site an incredible collection of OS X knowledge!

To mark the occasion, I'm giving away a free signed copy of the Power Hound book to our 50,000th registrant. To make it just a bit more fun, though, I'm going to give it to one of the five people who registered "around" the 50,000th user mark, since they all registered in a relatively short timeframe.

So if your macosxhints.com username is (in no particular order)...

bec44 ... imbuedblue ... msbarlow ... user998877 ... Talbot

... then please send me an email. First email I receive from one of these five users will get the signed book. Remember, you must send your email from the account you used to register here on macosxhints (as that's how I'll confirm your identity).

I wonder if Rob knows which are being used and by how many? Which one is most popular?

It seems to me they are in alphabetical order...

I take that back, Talbot would be before user998877 if it were done alphabetically

Actually, there's another reason to be a member: not all the hints are viewable by non-members, which is why I joined (over the weekend).

Well, 99.5% are viewable by everyone. The only exceptions are the occasional "is it a hint?" entry, of which there are precisely ... 7 ... in the database right now. So actually, that's 99.89% "all viewable" :)

Other than that, everyone can see everything...

Just my luck to hit one then in one of my first visits, and not get the prize either!

So basically the slackers who joined in late get a free signed book but the members who joined early have to go out and buy one?

Just kidding, congrats to MacOSHints on reaching this milestone.

Don't worry, according to MacOSXHintsRumors.com, next week every member gets a gold bound free copy.

It's good to see this community growing. Thanks to you for the first brick (and of course a lot more...).

'Nested' replies
Authored by: chris_on_hints on Feb 07, '05 05:17:54PM

Apart from being able to post hints and replies to hints, the thing i like about being registered is that you can set your preferences to show the hint comments in 'nested' form - so you can see all levels of the discussion at once, rather than having to navigate to see replies to comments

i recommend it to anyone using the site...

That's pretty much why I signed up. Nested view drives me bonkers

Getting an email from someone isn't proof at all of their identity. However, emailing them back and getting a reply is a much better method. It could take me 1 line of PHP to send an email to anyone from anyone.

Correct -- you can easily send me an email from any_person@any_domain.com. However, I bet you can't figure out exactly what the username and domain are for any of the above five people, hence it won't help you much :).

And there will be back and forth after the initial response ... but even if there weren't, I think I'm the only one with the 'key' to this puzzle, which are those users' email addresses (note: there is a way you could perhaps get their email address, but it would involve corresponding with the user, which is kind of more of a social engineering challenge :) ).
