Watch for a Microsoft Word auto-complete date error Apps
Microsoft seems to have not fixed in Word 2004 an irritating bug that surfaced in v.X, namely, that when it auto-completes the date for you, it uses the date when you launched Word (instead of that day's date). This is a problem if you don't quit Word, sleep your computer, then wake your computer the next day and start typing. In that situation, Word will auto-complete with yesterday's date.

For example, if today is the 5th, and you type "February," Word will try to plug in "5, 2005." If you launched Word on the 3rd though, it will try to plug in "3, 2005" even though it's the 5th.

There's no work-around that I've discovered (except making sure to quit Word every night), and worse still, it's not always consistently a problem (but it happens enough that I've become sensitive to it). So just be careful using auto-complete for the date (you might consider turning it off) because you may mis-date an important letter.

A good way to get around this is to go to Insert > Date and Time... (maybe set up a keyboard shortcut to access this menu item), and then choose the date format you'd like and make sure "update automatically" is checked. This will use the date on which the document is printed every time you print it. The downside is that you won't be able to tell *when* you printed the document (since opening the file on any day will show that day's date), but that's what File Info is for, right?

other apps do this too.

I've seen the same thing happen with MYOB also. I think its pretty common for apps to not check the date after they've been launched.

"What, you mean you don't reboot every day?"

I have Word quit so many times a day (on XP) that it might as well only check the time on application startup.

This bug has been around longer than vX. Goes back to Office 98, maybe even earlier. It's driven me nuts for years.
