Force iPhoto to install the 5.0.1 update Apps
Apple released an update to iPhoto 5 today (version 5.0.1), which solves some issues that some users were having (me included). According to the release notes, the update:
... addresses issues with upgrading iPhoto 4 libraries, dragging albums into folders, importing MPEG 4 movies, and also includes a number of other minor fixes.
The update is available via the Software Update menu, in most cases. In some cases, though, it's not recognizing that the new update is available. None of my computers showed the update as being available. To fix this, navigate to the Receipts folder, located at /Library/Recipts. Next, find all of the iPhoto files located in that folder. I had four files related to iPhoto (iPhoto.pkg, iPhotoContent.pkg, iPhotoUpdate401.pkg, iPhotoUpdate403.pkg). To make the 5.0.1 update work, drag those files out of the Receipts folder and put them some place safe (the Desktop is fine).

Now that you've moved those files, open Software Update and check for the new software. It should now recognize the update. Go ahead and update the software as you normally would. Test the software to make sure it works. Update complete. I then trashed those old iPhoto files that were removed from the Receipts folder. (Not necessarily recommending that you do the same. You can, or you can just throw them back in the Receipts folder. They shouldn't do any harm.)

[robg adds: This is good general advice, and I thought we'd run it once here before for fixing any non-installable updates, but I can't find it. So here it is -- but please, you should put the Receipts back in when you're done. They're important...]

you have to have iPhoto 5 as a part of iLife '05 already installed for Software Update to even recognize it in the first place. If you don't already have it, this hint won't help you get it.

iPhoto 5.0 Stability
Authored by: themadjuggler on Feb 03, '05 12:48:15PM

(slightly off-topic)

What I'm concerned with is the safety of upgrading to iPhoto 5.01... Is it still as buggy and crash-prone as people have made it out to be? Have there been any fixes since then?

All I've heard so far are horror stories.

Receipts

Maybe a bit off topic, but why are the receipts important? What are they good for?

Ditto on the question. What do the receipts do? Let the application/OS know that the package has already been installed?

Receipts

Each receipt package contains a bill of materials file (Archive.bom) that tells you everything that was installed and, most importantly, what the permissions are for each installed file. Disk Utility uses these to repair permissions. See <http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106712> for details. You can also check them out by opening an Archive.bom file using the lsbom command in the Terminal.

Receipts

They're also used in the Software Update mechanism to let you know what's available. When Software Update connects, it essentially interrogates what receipts are on the machine (thus: what is installed) to prompt you what updates there are. So if you don't have iPhoto5 installed, you don't have the receipt for iPhoto5, so it doesn't inform you of any updates.

Note that this doesn't mean you can get iPhoto5 for free by hacking together a receipt; the updates are only deltas from the original install, so you'll still be missing some key files, even if you could download and install the update.
