Solve a NeoOffice/J patching problem Apps
I'm not sure if this is a hint or just good old common sense, but here goes ... I recently switched from using OpenOffice.org (OOo) to NeoOffice/J, an OS X-native version of OOo written mostly in Java. It does everything I need and is reasonably stable. However, when I start up the application, it checks to see if there are any patches available. If there are, it opens up my browser and takes me to the download page. Convenient, no?

Except for one thing: when I try to install the patches (in .pkg format), the installer insists that there are no suitable partitions for the installation. (They all appear crossed out in red.)

The most recent patch was just the other day and after failing to install once again, I decided to do something about it. I uninstalled NeoOffice/J and its support files (just drag them into the Trash). Then I downloaded NeoOffice/J again and reinstalled. After the install, I applied the patch and it worked just fine. In fact, the update gave me better startup speed, improved Office compatibility and a snazzy new icon and splash screen!

Solve a NeoOffice/J patching problem

I'm a NeoOffice user and have found this same issue. What seems to be going on is that the patches are very version specific. So for discussion purposes let's say you have version 1.1. The latest patch updates the software to 1.2.3, for instance. Well, in this case you would need to have 1.2.X on you system in order to update to 1.2.3. The patch will not update the software your 1.1 to 1.2, and then up to 1.2.3.

I hope this helps.

It seems you were still running NeoOffice/J 1.1 Alpha 2, and the latest patches only work on NeoOffice/J 1.1 Beta. Neo/J moved from the OpenOffice.org 1.1.2 codebase to the 1.1.3 codebase between Alpha 2 and Beta, so one can't just patch Alpha 2 and get Beta. It would be like trying to apply the Mac OS X 10.3.1 updater to Mac OS X 10.2.8....

Within a given product version (e.g., Beta), the latest patch will always contain the contents of all the previous patches for that version (like the 10.3.7 Combo updater).

BTW, I forgot to add that you shouldn't need to throw out the "support files" (aka the NeoOffice/J-1.1 folder in your ~/Library folder) to get the patches working. The folder in your Library is compatible across the x.x.1 point releases (OOo 1.1.0, 1.1.1, etc.) and Neo/J creates a new folder in your Library when the format of the contained files does change (going from Neo/J 0.x [OOo 1.0.3] to 1.1 [OOo 1.1.x]).

And one minor nit-pick: Neo/J is not "written mostly in Java." See this article in the NeoWiki for more details: http://neowiki.sixthcrusade.com/index.php/NeoJFAQ.
