Burn iDVD5 projects to external burner and DVD+RW Apps
The new iDVD 5 that ships with iLife '05 brings DVD+RW support. I heard from someone that it also allows you to burn to external DVD burners now, but with my internal Superdrive on my G5 2.0 set as the 'default' burner for iDVD, I couldn't test this directly.

I was, however, able to burn my iDVD project to a DVD+RW disc using Toast 6.0. First, I saved my project to a disc image in iDVD: File->Save As Disc Image. Next, in Toast, select the Disc Copy function and choose 'Image File' in the side drawer. Drag your image file into the window, and Toast will ask if you want to mount it. I said yes, but don't know if this is necessary. Then, burn the disc.

I used a FireWire Pioneer DVR-107D burner with firmware 1.18, and burned to a Fuji Film 4.7 GB DVD+RW 4x disc. It ran fine on my old Panasonic DVD player.

there's also an "easter egg" trick...if you install Patchburn 3 and allow two files (in the preferences of Patchburn 3) to be installed, control-clicking on the "Burn" button in iDVD will allow you to burn directly to external drives. i understand USB 2.0 drives work fine, too.

You don't need to mount the image

To burn an image you don't need to mount it. Also you don't even need to use Toast. You can use the Disk Utility to burn the image. In Disk Utility, select "Burn..." from the "Images" menu and select your image file in the Open dialog. Alternatively you can drag the image file into Disk Utility's left-side pane, then select it in there and then click the burn button.

If you *are* using Toast, though, it includes a contextual-menu titled "Toast It". Just right-click or control-click the image file in the Finder and select Toast It from the menu. Toast will launch and offer to burn the image to disc right away.

Help. You seem to know what you are talking about. I tried what you said with my Panasonic sw9585 DVD burner with USB (downloaded patchburn 3, installed the two documents and all that). I did the hack in iDVD 4 it didn't work, although I was able to create an image. I tried your method of burning it using Disk Utilities. They recognize the writer, but will not burn the disk. It says there is no DVD-R inserted (which there is). What do I need to do?

No need for the patch/hack with an external drive. iDVD evens opens the drawer if a blank DVD is not found. No need to hold the option key with the Hurz/Prurz files. Very nice.

G5 Dual, 10.3.7. Lacie DVD-R/RW+CD 4x

I have burned both a DVD-R and a DVD+RW from the iDVD 5. :-)

DVD+R/RW Warning and Solutions.

Do note that currently, no Apple brand drives "BitSet" DVD+R/RW discs as DVD-ROM. What this means is that only players compatible with DVD+R (few and far between) will be able to play these discs. There are a few drives that can bitset DVD+R/RWs on the Mac. These include older Ricoh and HP 2X DVD+R/RW burners using the DVDPlusTool utility and the newer PioData DVR-108.

If you have a Pioneer DVR-108, it can be flashed into a PioData using the firmware available from PioData and the DVRFlash utility from RPC1.ORG.

The newest Pioneer drive in Apple's distribution, the DVR-117 is actually a crippled version of the DVR-108 and can be flashed to a Pioneer or PioData DVR-108. I don't recommend doing this until the DVR-117 firmware becomes available. The reason for this warning is that the G5's cooling routines tend to have difficulty when the firmware on the DVR is changed. Flashing the drive at this time offers no process of reverting back to the official firmware.

BTW: All Dual Layer (DVD-DL) drives automatically bitset the DL discs.

Sorry… One clarification. The PioData firmware will only work on Pioneer DVR-108A or A08 drives. It will not work on Pioneer DVR-108XL or A08XL drives.
