iWork's Keynote 'First Look' now online Reviews
Based on some hands-on time with the new version of Keynote in Apple's iWork suite, I have written up a 'First Look' piece for MacCentral on Macworld.com:

First Look: Keynote 2

The main focus of the article is showing what's new and improved over the previous version of Keynote. It's not a full-blown review, but it does cover pretty much every new feature, with a fair number of screenshots and a couple of short movies.

Look for a similar writeup on Pages on either Monday or Tuesday...

It's great to have a review of Keynote - but what we really need is a Keynote vs. PowerPoint article, detailing distinct strengths and weaknesses of each.

If this already exists, someone please point me to it.

it looks like this comparison was using older versions of Keynote and Powerpoint ... the only reason i bring this up is i was delightfully surprised at some of the new features of Keynote in Rob's review, and it should improve Keynote's score in that head-to-head comparison at keynoteuser.com

I plan on doing something like this soon, though others will probably beat me to it! :)

iWork's Keynote 'First Look' now online

One of PowerPoint's most useful features for lecturing is the ability, with a Wacom tablet, to write directly on the presentation by writing on the tablet. It lets you turn PowerPoint into a blackboard or overhead. That has been a feature of PowerPoint for the last two versions at least. BUT, it is not possible in the previous version of Keynote. The questions is, has that now changed? Can I write on projected screens in the new version?

Otherwise, Keynote remains pretty but not functional for me.

I don't believe this is possible. I tried it, but it only treated my pen presses as mouse clicks.

Presenter's tools on iBook
Authored by: hamishb on Jan 23, '05 08:10:44AM

The Presenter's tools which project the slide on an external monitor (e.g. data projector) and has notes, next slide etc. on the computer's screen look very cool.

I use my iBook extensively for giving lectures etc. - but it only has monitor mirroring and not spanning like the PowerBooks.

Any idea if Keynote 2 will suddenly gift my 2 1/2 year old Dual USB iBook with dual monitor capabilities?

Monitor Hack *NOT* on Older iBook
Authored by: Enkerli on Jan 24, '05 08:05:55AM

Isn't that hack supposed to work only with newer iBooks and prevent older iBooks from booting?
Older iBooks (up to "Dual USB" at least) have a different card than the newer ones.

Has anyone else had any trouble with the Media Browser? It responds _incredibly_ slowly (CPU spikes) and eventually bogs down Keynote or Pages so badly that I have to quit them and relaunch.

Is this happening to anyone else?

Media Browser not sluggish here
Authored by: Han Solo on Jan 23, '05 05:33:30PM
Sorry, not here. iLife '04 — not '05 — and both iPhoto (about 2400 photos) and iTunes (4500 songs) integration through the Media Browser seems fine.... Indeed, much faster than I had anticipated. Too bad it isn't possible to control-click on a photo from within Pages or Keynote and open it for editing in iPhoto — would be a nice additional way to integrate things. Maybe with iLife '05...?

For some sort of reference relative to your system, this is on a 15" Al PB 1.25GHz w/ 1 GB RAM and an 80 GB hard drive. HTH.

View all slides at once?
Authored by: rbenezra on Jan 23, '05 10:37:12AM

Does anyone know if there is a way to view all slides at once in Keynote with the ability to vary slide size similar to PowerPoint ? The scroll list of slides on the left of Keyonote is useless if you neeed to move slides in a large show. Without this feature, as much as I like Keynote, I won't be able to use it routinely. Thanks.

Yeah, I've got iLife '05 so maybe that's part of it. I bet it's my files though; I've got some huge movie projects in the Movies folder. This is on a 12" 1.33 ghz w/ 768 mb ram and 80 gig drive so I think I've got plenty of raw power. Thanks though, it's good to know where the problem is.

We are also posting a collection of user tips at the Keynote HQ forums. Rob had done a great job of providing an overall review of Keynote 2. We are posting information about the new themes, the new Web View (and how it can misbehave), and other tips.

Another feature missing from Keynote 2 is the ability create scatter charts (where a line chart can have a "blank" value that is not plotted as zero). The charting features are largely unchanged.

The location of themes have also changed, although Keynote 2 looks in the Keynote 1 theme folders as well. New themes are stored in

 /Library/Application Support/iWork/Keynote/Themes
