Install old Keynote themes in new Keynote Apps
iLife and iWork both ship tomorrow, but a number of people already have their boxed copies, so I figure it's OK to run this hint (and the iPhoto hint a bit further down the page) today, as the programs are out there...

The new version of Keynote adds 10 new themes, all of them very nicely designed. However, probably in the interest of symmetry (20 total themes), two themes have been left behind -- Sandstone and Leather Book didn't make the cut, it seems.

If you have the first version of Keynote, however, it's easy to install these themes for use in the new version. First, make sure neither version of Keynote is running. In the Finder, control-click on the Keynote application and choose Show Package Contents. In the new window that opens, navigate to Contents -> Resources -> Themes. Now open a new Finder window and navigate to the top-level Library -> Application Support -> Keynote -> Themes folder (create the Themes folder if it doesn't exist).

In the first Finder window, hold the Command key and click on each of the following files to select them all:
  • 07_Sandstone_8x6.kth
  • 07_Standstone_10x7.kth
  • 11_Leather Book_8x6.kth
  • 11_Leather Book_10x7.kth
Release Command, hold down Option (to create copies), and then drag the four files into the second window you opened. Now when you launch the new Keynote, you'll have 22 themes available, with the two new "old" themes being last in the list. Personally, Sandstone was one of my favorites, so I'm glad it was this easy to add to the new Keynote version (which is really well done, but more on that when I get a chance to post a review).

Good hint. I like both of those themes as well. I, for one, am hoping for some more new freebies from theme developers....

Keynote HQ offers a free theme for newsletter subscribers.

They also have other themes for download that are only visible to users logged into their forums.

Yeah, bring on more new Freebie themes! Right on, those other themes they have, the 10 or 20 buck ones, who can afford that when you are a homeless Mac user. I couldn't care less about those ones, they cost money for pete's sake.

Over and out, my hot spot is closing for the day.

iWork

My iWork arrived today. What's different about the posted method than opening an existing keynote document and then selecting File -> Save Theme... (which saves it in the iWork/Themes folder)?

I should point out two negatives: first disappointment is that there is now a software serial number that you need to enter. Second disappointment is that you must run as administrator and enter them. If you run as a regular user and enter them, they aren't accepted.

Having said that, Pages works just like Keynote: it takes a while to get used to, but once you do, it is very efficient.

Well, if you'd never used either of those themes before in a presentation of your own, you wouldn't have a saved document to open :). Other than that, I believe they work the same.

Regarding the serial number: Yes, it's a bit of a hassle. The good news is that there's still no activation: it doesn't send it out to the net to verify it against a list of "known pirated" serials, for instance.

Old Keynote Image Library and Extracting from a Keynote 1 CD
Authored by: nickv2002 on Jan 21, '05 08:22:25PM
Two related tips:

First, I found Keynote 2 doesn't have the Image Library that the original Keynote included. These were a series of of Keynote presentations with useful "clip art" (in quotes because they were much better quality than most clip art and even included some clips with alpha-channeled transparency). Anyway, these were stored in the top-level Library:

Library/Application Support/Keynote/Image Library/

There are 5 presentations including, Chart Colors, Flags, Objects, Pictures, and Symbols & Borders. If you installed Keynote 2 on top of the original Keynote you probably already have them there (though a lot of people don't know about them), to use them just double click them and they will open in Keynote 2, if you don't have them you can copy them over using the same tecnique discribed below.

The second tip is kind of obvious for some users, but I'll mention it just in case . I didn't have the original Keynote installed when I installed Keynote 2 but I do have the original Keynote on CD. Instead of re-installing the original Keynote from the .pkg file on the disc, I opened it up with Pacifist (from CharlesSoft) and extracted both the missing themes mentioned in the tip and the Image Library presentations I mentioned above). I found that the themes weren't stored in the same place inside the .pkg file however. Instead they were stored in:

Keynote.app/Resources/English.lproj/Themes/

It may be that Apple changed this location in later revisions however (I have a 1.0 install disc). Obviously, if you want different language versions make sure to copy the correct files from the appropriate .lproj folder.

Duplicate Fonts?
Authored by: rhowell on Jan 21, '05 08:43:53PM

What's with the duplicate fonts that get installed by iWork? If I open Fontbook, I have two instances of

Bradley Hand ITC TT
Party LET
Savoye LET
Stone Sans ITC TT
Stone Sans Sem ITC TT

Turns out one of each is an FFIL file, and the other is a DFONT file. My first thought is one is used for display, the other for print. But then i notice other new fonts like

Bank Gothic
Blackmoor LET
Bodoni
Jazz LET
Mona Lisa Solid ITC TT
Princetown LET
Santa Fe LET
SchoolHouse Printed A
Snell Roundhand

and probably a few others that only come as FFIL files, no duplicates.

Anybody else seeing this? Why the duplicates?

You already had copies of the DFont files. The FFILs are the newly installed copies. Presumably, you didn't have copies of BankGothic, etc.

A Petition: how to represent pathnames
Authored by: gatorparrots on Jan 22, '05 11:53:45PM
Rob, please, please, please consider this request. I love the site and community surrounding it, but one thing really irks me: it's how you represent file pathnames in your articles:
"navigate to the top-level Library -> Application Support -> Keynote -> Themes folder"
Please consider switching over to the simpler typical UNIX path representation from the root of the filesystem:
/Library/Application Support/Keynote/Themes
That way those of us following along on these hints can simply Go in the finder (CMD+shift+G) directly there by pasting in the pathname from the hint.

Thanks for listening.

I'm with you on this one. It seems a lot easier to type them that way anyway.

There are very good reasons for leaving the paths the way they are now. Read the FAQ.

How to represent pathnames
Authored by: gatorparrots on Jan 24, '05 12:22:18AM
Pursuant to the FAQ you cite, I cannot see how
/Library/Application Support/Keynote/Themes
qualifies as a long pathname. In the FAQ on the subject, Rob indicates that he represents a long pathname using the -> delimiters. Lately, however, it seems to have become the de facto standard on the site. I rarely see any path represented in the standard UNIX way anymore (with simple / delimiters). It seems to have simply become his habit of late to use the nonstandard delimiters: another recent example. (I just can't see how /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc qualifies as a "long" pathname.)

My plea is for him to return to the standard he set forth in the FAQ -- that only inordinately long pathnames be represented with the nonstandard method ( -> ). Most pathnames in hints could (and should) still be represented with standard delimiters (/).

How to represent pathnames
Authored by: nickv2002 on Jan 24, '05 02:14:52AM

Okay let's take one of Rob's from above:

Contents -> Resources -> Themes

and then

/Contents/Resources/Themes/

Now take your browser window and make it as narrow as possible. Does it break up the pathname?

As you can see there's clearly no reason to use the "=>" for pathnames like this because the template only lets users make the window so narrow before enabling horizontal scrolling. Furthermore, if the location is placed on it's own line it's easier to follow if a user is switching back and forth between the page and the Finder. I can understnad the arrows for <b>long</> pathnames but not for short ones like this. Does anyone have a counter argument?

I'll try to be a bit better about shorter paths, but I won't use longer path without breaks, because it will force horizontal scrolling for many people -- and when it does, I *always* get emails.

Also keep in mind that people browse with different sized fonts, too, so it's not strictly line length.
