For some reason, OS X has never been great with Brother printers like my MFC 8300. So I was delighted to discover that when I upgraded to Airport Extreme, my trusty MFC worked perfectly with USB printing from the base station (6-foot long 6-pin to 4-pin USB cable not included). Then I upgraded the firmware on my Airport Extreme base station to v5.5, and my printer disappeared.
Fortunately, Apple has a fix in their AirPort Extreme Firmware 5.5.1. If your USB-connected printer has mysteriously disappeared after an update to your base station's firmware, this may do the trick.
