A fix for a changed password wireless connection error Network
I was recently mucking around with the password settings for my wireless network (which is running off of an Asante wireless router), and for some reason, my iBook started refusing to connect to it, giving the ever descriptive "There was an Error Joining the Network" dialog. It would connect fine when I made a new location and entered the password into the Network Settings prefpane, but would refuse to connect if I selected my network on the Airport menu item while using my usual Location. Other computers connected with absolutely no problem without having to change network settings.

After much pulling of hair, I found that if you had the network selected as a "trusted network," OS X saves the password in your Keychain (which is logical). But if you then change the network's password, OS X will throw the "error joining" message instead of asking you to enter a new password. Erasing the entry in my keychain for my wireless password allowed me to connect without having to change locations or do any other sort of voodoo.

Perhaps it is a problem with my router not sending a proper error to my iBook, but I figure I'm not the only person who has run into this problem.

This is an annoying problem. Another solution is to open the "Internet Connect" app, choose the "AirPort" tab and in the "Network" pull-down menu, choose "Other". Manually enter the SSID (network name) and new password.

This method works well because opening "Internet Connect" allows you to see a detailed wireless signal level as well.

Does anyone know where the "trusted network" and "autmoatically connect" settings get stored?

There's an open network at work that, from my office, has very low signal. However, in the food court, it is the only network available, and I sometimes use it.

Once I accidentally checked the "aumotatically connect" option in the box that popped up. Now, sometimes when I'm in my office, it connects first to that open network, and then the signal drops off... you get the picture.

I've looked for a GUI to edit those settings, but haven't found it. Anyone know a file where those are stored?

Well, to answer my own question seems to be:

~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.airport.plist

However, after editing this file, selecting new networks doesn't seem to update it... hope I didn't break anything. ;-)

Funny, there is no such file as:

~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.airport.plist

There are a bunch of airport plists, but not one by that name.

I'm running 10.3.7, fully patched.

It's actually in the root library's preferences folder:

/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.airport.preferences.plist
