Compare typefaces with Exposť and Font Book Apps
I like to compare a bunch of typefaces at once to decide which I want to use in a particular project. Apple's Font Book allows you to double-click on suitcases and FFIL files to show you a preview without installing them. It also allows you to preview several typefaces at once, by dragging a folder onto the dock icon. But they are opened cascade style, one on top of the other.

Exposť to the rescue! When you hit F9, it shows all the previews at once. You can even set the text if you have a very specific need. You don't want to open too many windows at once, though. Depending on the size of your screen, the windows may be too small to see the details of each font (on my 20", its about 32 windows).

Then when you find the typeface you want, you can activate it by bringing that typeface's window to the front with a click. Don't forget to go to the Preferences to set Font Book to copy when installing. Font Book's not a full replacement for commercial font software, but far more cost effective for some of us.

Wouldn't F10 be more appropriate than F9 in this case?

I agree... F10 sounds more appropriate.

I agree, F10 sounds more appropriate.

If I only want to look at the separate windows of Fontbook (and not my open Finder/Safari/Whatever windows), I would use F10.

F9 shows all the windows of the front-most app

that's why i said that and not F10. i dont want to compare each window of type to my finder windows or browser windows or ichat buddy list or widgets or what have you.

Sorry, you're wrong. Go to the Exposť System Pref pane, and look; it clearly states (by default) "All windows: F9" and "Application Windows: F10". Maybe you've changed your defaults???

I think he means Font Book's Dock icon. If you drag a bunch of font suitcases to the Font Book dock icon (meaning you've already launched it, or keep it in your dock), it will open the preview windows.

I've tried dragging a folder of fonts to the Font book icon but it does nothing. Even when the app is running.

Make sure that the folder doesn't contain files other than font files, as well.
