Print to GDI-supported printers with 10.3 System
This is posted to help people out who may be trying to print from Panther (10.3) using GIMP Print, but are not having any success. This is especially helpful if you had a printer that worked with GimpPrint under Jaguar (10.2) and stopped in Panther. This solution applied to the following configuration:

  • Samsung ML-1210 (USB printer)
  • SMC2804WBRP-G Barricadeā„¢ g Wireless Broadband Router with Built-in USB Print Server (supports LPD)
The Samsung Printer has GDI printer description files available. Get these and install them. Also install GIMP Print. Now here's the kicker. The documentation says that Panther users do not have to install ESP Ghostscript 7.07.1. That may be true, but I was not able to get the Samsung ML-1210 to work without it. So if you are able to successfully send a file to your print server, but no print job comes out, install ESP Ghostscript 7.07.1, and it should work.

Follow the configuration details to add the printer, as explained in this hint. Hope this helps and saves you time; if you have a printer that can be supported using CUPS and Gimp Print, then try installing ESP Ghostscript 7.07.1 and it should work.

What is more: that is the only way to get some <b>Lexmark</b> printers to work under Mac OS X. For example e210 Laser, as it is a cousin of Samsung (made in the same factory, very similar appearances, though Samsung ML-1210 is faster and OS X compatible). Just install Samsung drivers, and you're good to go.

Not to be too mushy, but thank you, thank you, thank you. Adding in Ghostscript was the answer I had been looking for. I lost my ability to print when I lost my harddrive and have been trying frantically for the past couple of weeks to print wirelessly again. I thought it was great to wake up this morning and see a tip that almost screamed at me saying "Here's the answer".

Cheers,

Michael

I've tried these hints(ESP, Samsung GDI, Gimp) for a RISO RP3700 which uses "RISORINC3 - enhanced GDI", but the farthest I can get is the RISO displaying "Job Processing". If anyone has had luck getting one of these to work with OSX, please share.

It appears the print queue is "lp" from the RISO docs.
Maybe I'm missing one simple thing...
:-)

G4 DP800, 1GB RAM, OSX.3

Couldn't get the driver to be recognized for my ML-1210 despite installing Ghostscript and the Samsung GDI drivers. Anyone have any ideas?
