A fix for a Java 1.4.2 failure in Mac OS X 10.3.6 Apps
After running the combo 10.3.6 update on my G4 PowerBook, I noticed that one of my Java programs no longer functioned. In fact, running java -version in the Terminal caused a segmentation fault! I eventually broke down and reinstalled Java (first with the Java 1.4.2 base package, and then with the Java 1.4.2 Update 2 package {which includes Update 1}). This fixed the problem.

Having searched around, I eventually found some mention by other folks of a similar circumstances, but they claim they were able to get Java working again by just using the Java 1.4.2 Update 2 package alone.

I hope this saves some other folks some panic!

Sane here: AlPBG4 10.3.6 combo:
% java -version
Segmentation fault
Plus, Safari crashes on pages with java code.
I confirm the reapplying the Java142Update2.pkg fixes the issue, 26M download and a restart :-( .

Thanks. It sure did save me some trouble. A few of my favourite sites caused my safari to unexpectedly quit. Your hint cured everything. Did a reinstall of Java142 and all's fine. Thanks once again!

What should "java -version" return after a successful 10.3.6 and Java142Update2 install? In other words, how can I tell whether I need to reapply Java142Update2 after having installed the 10.3.6 Combo update?

(Mine shows 1.4.2_05-141.3 / 1.4.2-38)

TIA

Ditto. No problems after 10.3.6 upgrade. My java version looks the same as above. The question now is: what did it look like for the other guys?

Exactly :-)

But why? I didn't reinstall anything (well, not Java142Update2.pkg at any rate) in order to get the java -version numbers I reported.

I applied the 10.3.6 update and the Firmware patch to my G5 1.6. Since then, I can't view any mpg in any browser, can't download any mpg, and sound is dead except for the start-up chord. I have tried downloading mpgs to view in QuickTime, and also opening the mpg source URL in QuickTime...same thing. All attempts to access remote mpgs on servers, or to play mpgs in any application, cause an application crash, throwing a UNIX exception. I have not trapped the exception. Any fix ideas? KMac.

How do I reinstall the java 1.4.2? I can't find it on Software Update (no matter what tricks I try) and I can't find any sort of install software on my computer. I have the receipt, but it won't let me install it.
