Mis-align multiple desktops for more Exposť hot corners Desktop
I like using hot corners to activate Exposť. I also like to use multiple displays to expand my desktop. Unfortunately, when the desktop is spread across two displays at the same resolution, hot corners are active only at the outside corners of the combined desktop, not at the inside corners of each display. You have to take your cursor all the way to the right edge of the rightmost display to activate a right-edge hot corner. And with two wide-screen displays, that's quite a trek.

The trick, then, is just to slightly mis-align the displays in the "Arrangement" tab of the Displays panel in System Preferences. Nudge the display on the left slightly above the display on the right, and two new corners are created: the upper-right corner of the display on the left, and the lower-left corner of the display on the right.

The corners at the far edges of each display are still active, too. So now you have six corners: upper left, upper middle, upper right, and lower left, lower middle, and lower right.

It's not quite the same as having all four corners active on each display, but two short-stop hot corners can save you a little mileage on your mouse.

How many corners?

Nice hint.

Won't you have eight corners?

It's only six. The convex corners can't stop a mouse pointer. Only the concave corners.

A word of warning though: Misaligned desktops might mess up X11 apps that map windows into a particular upper corner. Sometimes the titlebars get placed outside the visible area, and they are not grabbable.

Alternative for trackpad users

If you're using a trackpad instead of a mouse (you mention that this was being done on a powerbook) there's a trick to warp the cursor to the far side of the screen.

I'll give an example of how to move from the far left to the far right, I'll also assume that you're right handed (this works for all directions, and I'm left handed so it works for lefties too):
- start on the left side of the track pad with your index finger
- start moving to the right
- touch the tack pad with your middle finger
- lift your index finger off the trackpad

it takes a couple of tries to get familiar with the motion, but you can teach yourself to fly to any corner of the screen almost instantly.

Yap, this works very well, even too well. I'm constantly invoking Exposť involuntarily, at least I now know what is triggering it.

I was hoping this would work with docking a DragThing palette to an inside corner. Holding the Shift key should accomplish this, but I have not been able to do this with my new 'inside' corner. If anyone has better luck, please post.

um, er, couldn't you just define a keystroke combo to trigger expose?

If all that is too much trouble you can send me one of the 2 monitors , thus eliminating your problem.

How does Exposť work with two monitors
Authored by: hamarkus on Nov 09, '04 04:21:34PM

So, how does Exposť distribute the windows over the two screen, treating the the whole screen estate as one big screen?

If the window you want to make aktive ends up on the bottom left of the left screen and you have activated Exposť by going to right upper corner of the right screen you still have some way to travel.

On my two-monitor setup (Powerbook and external) it treats the two displays separately. Windows stay on the same display.

This also works great for when you are trying to make a safari window as large as possible. The resizer can now stop at my large window and making the resizing faster and easier.

It is such a simple hint but truly a good one.

Thanks

Freeware tool to shorten cursor "travel space" :)
Authored by: zeichensprecher on Jul 16, '05 09:02:16AM

Recently, I stumbled upon a nice freeware tool called "wraparound", which makes the cursor appear on the opposite side of the screen. For example, if the cursor "leaves" the screen on the right side, it will reappear on the left...
