Modify QuickTime controller's video and audio playback Web Browsers
I love movie trailers, but I also enjoy watching them scene-by-scene in trailers that contain fast/short sequences, such as the trailer to the upcoming Keanu Reeves film Constantine.

No longer do you have to keep rewinding to see these scenes; you can watch them in slow motion (or fast motion; whichever you prefer). To use this hidden trick (which I found with a slip of my pinky finger one afternoon), simply hold down the Control key while pressing the rewind or fast forward arrows on the QuickTime control strip in your favorite browser. You should then see a new slider (if you continue to hold down the arrows), as seen at left.

If you don't hold the arrows down, it will default to moving one level forward or backward (depending on which arrow you click first). The pitch of trailer's soundtrack also adjusts to the speed, too.

I'm sure many of you already know this, but you can also double the playback volume by holding down the Shift key while clicking on the volume button in the QuickTime controller, as seen at right. This is a nice feature for larger-than-normal audiences when showing off new cool trailers.

[robg adds: These two tricks only work in the browser-embedded QuickTime controller, not in the Finder's QuickTime preview player, nor in the normal QuickTime Player.]

If you use the Windows version of QuickTime, the Shift key volume trick is the same, but use the Alt key instead of Ctrl for the speed slider.

The variable speed playback is nothing new -- it's been a feature of Quicktime player since 1993 or 1994...

Unfortunately, with the introduction of OS X, you can no longer use older versions of the Quicktime player... is there some way to de-skin the current Quicktime player?

Man, I wish they'd put that back into QT Player. I used that all the time in pre-OSX, like when a movie is taking a little too long.

Standalone Player

There is a great little standalone app called "Quicker Player" that has a speed control. Can't seem to find a link but it's by "Jarir Maani". Just fire it up, drop a movie on the window and adjust to whatever speed you want from extremely slow to very fast.

Quickern Player help
Authored by: jumatkin on Jan 24, '05 12:33:12AM

I am having problems getting QuickerPlayer to work. I drop a mp3 into the screen and all of a sudden it seizes up and won't run; it gets small and shrinks and then I have to shut it down. I can run mp3 in iTunes and Quick Time, but neither one of them has the accelerated playback function. I found another type of software (shareware) called Mercury Hg3 from anomaly industries with this feature, but it also no longer works. Both of these applications worked initially, but now they do not. Can you help me out here, or direct me to someone who can? I really need to be able to listen to lectures (I'm in medical school) at an accelerated playback, and these are the only 2 applications I know of.

You can use control+click or Get Info with any of the Quicktime Movies on your computer to open the files (Quicktime files) with Safari, and then use this tips with all the movies you want to.
