There have been other hints on this subject, like this one and this one, but since Brother has released an updated version of their CUPS printer drivers, these articles call for an update. This article gives a how-to.
To install the Brother HL-1430 as a network printer using the Linksys PSUS4 on your Macintosh running Mac OS X Panther, do the following:
- If you haven't already done so, hook up the Linksys PSUS4 to your LAN and your printer, following the instructions from Linksys (by the way, this print server makes a great 4-port switch, too, with zero configuration).
- If your LAN has a DHCP server, the PSUS4 will get its IP from there. If not, you will need the Windows tools that came on CD with the PSUS4 to configure it further for IP. Use VPC or a true Wintel machine.
- Point your browser at the DHCP-supplied IP address for the PSUS4, login (default password is 'admin', username may be left blank). Assign the PSUS4 a static IP address (on the Protocol tab), e.g. 192.168.1.4. Also fill out the gateway (e.g. 192.168.1.1) and subnet mask (e.g. 255.255.255.0).
- Point your browser at the new IP address. You should get the same PSUS4 Setup pages. You may need to re-login. While you're there, disable AppleTalk (won't work with HL-1430) and NetBEUI unless you need it. Otherwise, it causes unneccesary network traffic.
- You're done setting up the PSUS4. Now go download and install the new Brother CUPS drivers. After the installation, you'll need to restart.
- Now comes the fun part. Launch the Printer Setup Utility (it's in /Applications -> Utilities).
- Select 'Add Printer.'
- From the top drop-down list, select 'IP Printing.'
- From the Printer Type dropdown, select 'LPD/LPR.'
- In the Printer Address field, fill in the IP address that you've assigned to your PSUS4. In this example, that would be 192.168.1.4.
- In the Queue Name field, type lp (this isn't in any of the other documentation).
- From the Printer Model dropdown, select 'Brother,' then 'Brother HL-1430 series CUPS.gz' from the type list that appears.
- Click 'Add,' then go to any program and print something.
That's it! You can print to your HL-1430 as if it were an expensive network printer.
