How to open .pps files with Keynote Apps
If you receive a .pps file and don't know what it is nor what to do with it, here's a quick tip. .pps files are generated by Microsoft PowerPoint, and they are nothing more than a slideshow of a PowerPoint presentation. When you recieve them through email and you click them, the system doesn't know what to do with them, even when you have Keynote installed.

The trick is to rename the file to .ppt, after which Keynote will instantly recognize them.

[robg adds: If you have Office for OS X installed, it should open .pps files just fine, unless they were encrypted on the Windows machine -- in that case, you'll have to ask for an unprotected version of the slideshow, as Office for OS X can't handle protected Office for Windows documents (a glaring oversight in the cross-platform compatibility arena, if you ask me).]

How to open .pps files with Keynote

I don't have Keynote, but to get .pps to be recognized by my Powerpoint, I needed to "Get Info" on a .pps file, choose Microsoft Powerpoint in the "Open with", and then click the box to "Use this application to open all documents like this." Another oversight...

I would imagine if you set that to Keynote instead, future documents would also open in Keynote when double-clicked.

How about ppt to PeeCee?

I unfortunately have the opposite problem. When creating a ppt document on my mac and then trying to open it in an older PC at the university, the PowerPoint app in the PC refuses to recognise/open the document. Any ideas? Doesn't seem they have a "save to older" option...

(Office X, version 10.1.1 ---> older PC with OLD powerpoint)

Thanks,

Fredrik

I remember using Microsoft's Powerpoint Viewer before I got Office. It's still out there.

If you do not have PowerPoint or Keynote, you can open them freely with OpenOffice that runs with X11" Works realy well for me...
