Internet connection via T637, Bluetooth, and GPRS Network
Mini-howto on connecting to the internet using a Sony Ericsson T637 with AT&T service. This uses GPRS, not a normal dialup account -- if you have a data transfer limit, watch your usage!

Read the rest of the hint for the steps...

  1. Pair the phone and your computer
  2. Open Bluetooth Serial Utility (/Applications -> Utilities -> Bluetooth Serial Utility.app)
    • Click 'New'
      1. Enter the name 'Phone'
      2. Select 'outgoing'
      3. Open 'select device', choose your phone's name on the left and 'Dialup Networking' on the right
      4. Click 'select'
      5. Make sure 'Port Type' is set to Modem, and none of the checkboxes are selected
    • Quit Bluetooth Serial Utility
  3. Open System Preferences
    • Open the Network pane
      1. A dialog should say that a new port was detected; click ok
      2. Drop down the 'Show' list, select 'Phone'
      3. As the telephone number, enter '*99***2#'
      4. Click on 'PPP Options'
        • Deselect 'Send PPP Echo Packets'
        • Deselect 'Use TCP Header Compression'
        • Click 'OK'
      5. Go to the 'Modems' tab
        • Deselect the two checkboxes
        • Make sure Dialing is set to Tone
        • Select 'Ericsson Infrared' for the Modem dropdown.
        • Select 'Show modem status in menu bar'
      6. Select 'Apply Now'
    • Exit from System Prefs
  4. On the phone, go to the 'Connect' item in the main menu
    • Go to Data Comm -> Data Accounts -> AWS Data -> Edit -> APN
    • Enter 'proxy', then exit out of all the menus.
  5. Click on the modem icon on the menu bar (make sure 'Phone' is selected as opposed to 'Internal Modem') and click Connect.
You should now be connected to the net via GPRS.

[robg adds: There's also an article about this on AT&T's support website.]

AT&T actually has a great web site for configuring their phones with your computer or PDA.

Different numbers
Authored by: lancebright on Nov 15, '04 01:00:31AM

So - there are at least three separate numbers that are suggested. This page suggests *99***2#, AT&T suggets one or both of *99# or *99***# on their sites...

Any ideas about the differences there, or why there is more than one number for the exact same thing?

This worked for me using my SunCom ("A Member of the AT&T Network") account. I first had to have my phone set up with them-- which required a phone call to SunCom tech-support.

REVISED FOR CINGULAR: Internet connection via T637, Bluetooth, and GPRS
Authored by: zberke on Jan 14, '05 12:52:49PM

I followed these directions exactly, except that I used the Cingular Username and password instead of leaving it blank:

Username: WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM
Password: CINGULAR1

I had to set these values correctly on the phone and on my bluetooth modem setup. They may already be set correctly on your phone -- I fooled around a lot before making it work, so I had to enter the correct values. FYI, the APN for cingular is different than AT&T as well:

APN: wap.cingular

Note that case is important for all of these values.

I found all this info at this PDF:
