Post to a Del.icio.us account from NetNewsWire Internet
I am a NetNewsWire junkie, and have recently discovered the del.icio.us website -- an online bookmark storage system (actually it's a bit more than that, but that's a quick explanation).

Since I do most of my reading in NetNewsWire what I really wanted was the ability to grab headlines while reading in NNW and post them to my del.icio.us account. I created the following AppleScript to do just that. Create the AppleScript below and save it to your NetNewsWire scripts directory. Then while reading in NNW, select any headline (unfortunately I have been unable to figure out how to get it to snag the pertinent info while actually viewing content) and choose the script from the Script menu.
tell application "NetNewsWire"
  set u to (URL of selectedHeadline) & "&title=" &
  (title of selectedHeadline) & "&extended=" &
  (description of selectedHeadline) & "&tags=" &
  (subject of selectedHeadline)
end tell

tell application "Safari"
  activate
  open location
  "http://del.icio.us/YOUR_ACCOUNT_NAME?noui=yes&jump=close&url="
  & u
end tell
Or just click here to open the above AppleScript in a new Script Editor window.

Thanks. Works great in OmniWeb too (after changing the word "Safari" to "OmniWeb").

And if you replace the whole tell application "Safari" ... end tell section with one single line:
open location "http://del.icio.us/YOUR_ACCOUNT_NAME?noui=yes&jump=close&url=" & u
... Mac OS X will always open the link in your default browser.

Two things you can change the
tell application "Safari"
to
tell application "System Events"
to send commands to the default browser. Also there is a cocoa client application for Del.icio.us that works with the "Post to Weblog" called Cocoal.icio.us That you might give a try too

Actually, I think you can leave off the tell application ... end tell. open location is a command in the StandardAdditions osax, and can be used as if it was built into AppleScript.

Cocoalicious is great and all - but its just one more damn app and window open on my machine where I already regularly keep almost 20 apps open at any given time. I wanted a quick, no nonsense way of posting to del.icio.us.

Great script! Couldn't resist another addition. This just gets the first 50 characters of the description and adds an ellipse:
tell application "NetNewsWire"
set u to (URL of selectedHeadline) &
		"&title=" & (title of selectedHeadline) &
		"&extended=" & (text 1 thru 50 of (get description of selectedHeadline)) &
		"" & "&tags=" & (subject of selectedHeadline)
end tell

tell application "Safari"
	activate
	open location "http://del.icio.us/YOURACCOUNT?noui=yes&jump=close&url=" & u
end tell

Great. Now how do I tell Firefox to pop open the specifically-sized del.icio.us post page in a new window?

Or, even better - pop open an application dialog text input box so you can enter the title, tags etc without having to connect to a web page?
