For all those who have GMail accounts and don't use FireFox (i.e. you can't use this hint), there's a free little utility available called GMailStatus. This works just like the "system tray" notifier for PCs that will display the number of messages in your GMail inbox. It also shows account usage, unread messages ... there are quite a few features, as you can see on the above web page.

cool stuff! i have a powerbook 12". needless to say, the status bar is way too short for all these cool apps. is there any way to show up all icons, that are hidden in the status bar, if it is too short? does anyone know?

Ok, so which one of those apps on that page will "show up all icons, that are hidden in the status bar, if it is too short?"

Cool! Now, if there's one app I've been digging around for and have yet to find it's a POP3 mail notifier. On my Windows boxen, I use ePrompter which is a tray notification util that monitors my mail accounts. At present, it monitors 6, because it also can monitor Yahoo and Hotmail accounts (gmail coming soon). The thing I like most about ePrompter is I can open the mailbox and read each message within it without having to open up a mail app. I can select to delete mails I don't want, and then later download them into Entourage. I've yet to find an app that even comes close to this simple functionality for my Mac. I'm not as concerned about more than POP3 support, as 99% of my mail comes into my home POP3 account. Does anyone know of a good one?

gCount!
gCount anyone? Let's be a little fair, why mention one without the other?
Fair?
I don't think it's a fairness issue. Who's to say the submitter has even heard of gCount? FWIW, I use gCount, but I've never tried the other one.
Fair?
Well, I guess it was a little premature to assume he knew about gCount, but any Mac software site that you search for Gmail will turn up both.
