Prevent Apple Remote Desktop 2 / scanner crashes Apps
There is a crash bug in the 2.0 version of Apple Remote Desktop which manifests itself when the admin account has multiple locations set-up in system preferences. The crash occurs when you fire up a scanner ... you get a couple of entries, and then whammo!, it's crash time.

The workaround is, unfortunately to remove locations from the Network panel in System Preferences. Everything works fine after that.

Another method to get out of this 'loop' (once you have set ARD to scanning it will always crash on startup once you've tried to do network scanning) is to create a Network Preference Location with all Port Settings disabled. I call mine 'No Network'. Use this Network Location and ARD should start up cleanly. You can then 'pull' the Scanner out of the left pane in ARD if you don't need it, otherwise you may accidently activate it again; you can create a "New Scanner" from the File Menu.

This Apple Tec Doc:
indicates "This happens if the total number of active network interfaces you have defined across all of your locations in the Network preference pane exceeds 29". I have found that decreasing your network ports interfaces below 29 does not resolve this issue. Possibly eliminating all interfaces completely or pulling the Pref File, /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/NetworkInterfaces.plist and starting over with the Network Settings will work...althought I have not tried this.

I do not need to use network scanning, although many folks who use ARD do; this problem as of yet has not been resolved by Apple!

How ironic...

I have had the software about two weeks and just decided to give it a shot today. I have been using TB2 and VNC mostly but the remote administration automation is attractive as we move the rest of the office to OS X.

I had several crashes on start up and fired off the crash reports to Apple. I was dreading the idea of getting in a service queue to figure it out. I happened actually scan the 'Read Me' thinking I might have installed incorrectly or missed something else. That is where the link for 'known issues' caught my eye. I read the comment about the multiple locations and tried the fix. I had 8 or more location settings. I also have a 'zNull' location that is no network I used when transporting and to refresh network from home, work or remote user sites. I noted that it said you had to 'delete' the unused network interfaces. I remember be able to do that in the past but I tried to delete the 'modem' entry and it did not remove from the list. I still have 7 locations including my zNull and since I use a third party card at home for wifi that would be 28 max intertfaces (airport, built-in enet, orinoco, modem).

I did not know about the scanner being the culprit and I could launch in null network but it failed until I reduced my number of locations. If you can afford to do so, count your interfaces and make sure that number X your interfaces is less than 29. Maybe you can actually delete the listed interfaces to reduce but I could not.

GREAT TIMING! i just got ARD2 yestday, installed fine on my desktop. but, my pb kept crashing.

i put it away for the evening, came back today and the solution is posted here on the front page.

for others having trouble, i found an even easier solution:

unplug/turn off your network connections.

for me, the crash occurs after it scans through several pages (on my 12" screen) of IPs. once i turned off airport (via the menu item) there was nothing to scan. after a few seconds, the little 'spinny' icon quit turning and ARD just sat there.

i then, turned the scanner's pulldown from 'local network' to 'network range' and set both values to '0'.

now it works fine. thanks a bunch....saved me an afternoon, im sure, of research.

if it aint broke, break it!

Window Focus Bug
Authored by: jkramlich on Sep 18, '04 08:00:27PM
I don't know where else to put this so I'll attach it to this thread. An interesting thing happened to a friend when he upgraded his powerbook to ARD2.

Every couple of seconds the current window would lose focus. It took us awhile to figure out what was causing the problem, killing ARD2 got rid of it.

Just a FYI for some of you out there.

Look it's me!
